Eh. I'll be watching the whole series with my friend tonight, anyway. I need to see this movie.

  2. Saw it as a part of a midnight preview. As a movie for fans or those familiar with the series its top notch. Though i question whether killing the shepard and wash will mean much to non-fans. As they didn't get much screen time and would have been seen as minor characters at best in another sci-fi film. Their death has more resonance because of the television show and maybe none in the context of the film. Either way though it was wonderfully done and the space battle stuff, though short still has a nice feel from the show. The Ensemble definitely loses focus because of the film, but the story progresses very nicely from the show, and in the context of the film, has some power as well, especially the third act of the film. Good stuff all around.

Joss Whedon does this stuff with his TV Shows, but honestly it can't work as well in film because they characters are too constrained and it seems like he needs more proverbial breathing room. but still a good Science Fiction film, especially considering Space Operas are mostly crap in film as of late.

  3. so i take it they dont go into any detail on the shepards past? thats the one thing i was hoping for. any setup for a sequel?

The beginning where they're entering the atmosphere and you can hear things rattling about is what makes this movies personality shine. The characters weren't gone in to as in depth, yes, but they didn't need to be. People knew Zoe and Wash were close, and that Kaylee and Simon had a lot of unresolved tension between them by body gestures and movement. The story was simple enough, although a bit convoluted. I'm not sure any political motive was used as Ebert suggested, but who knows?

I can't believe they killed off The Shepherd AND Wash. You're not allowed to kill a funny guy off after a comedic line like that unexpectedly. Jeez louise. I always thought Whedon would explain more of the Shepherd character, but apparently not and I don't think he ever planned to shed light on his past.

Mr. Universe was a great character but I'm positive this was going to be a beloved character built up over the course of a season or two and not 10 minutes of screen time. I would have liked to see more of his world but it wasn't to be. Can't stop the signal.

The Operative was AMAZING as an enemy. He knew he was a means to an end, and was at peace with it even though it meant he could never be apart of the end. Great shit. The biggest laughs, as usual, came from Jayne and his anti-team player comments in nefariously dangerous situations.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the movie and I'm glad they filled in the backstory needed for regular movie goers. I don't know if this movie will do well at the box office, but I hope it does.

Most importantly it's fun and entertaining.

no they don't even talk about it a little bit. I just feel like in the movie, if you want your moviegoers to care about the deaths of these characters... make them more... pivotal? In the film they were expendable so that's what they became. Considering the show though... wow. Wash's death was really unexpected.

  6. I saw it tonight and really liked it. I haven't seen any of the Firefly series, is it really that good? Is it funny like the movie was?

  7. Yes.

Jayne has an entire colony dedicated to his image as a hero because a job he was pulling at the time went south. He had to dump all of the loot in order to break the atmosphere of the planet, and it just so happened to land in the poor regions of place (this was before he had met the crew). When Serenity goes back to do a job or something like that the colony has a statue of him erected and a sing-song written. God it's awesome. I can't talk about it. It makes me too sad that it wasn't allowed to flourish. STOP MAKING ME TALK ABOUT IT.

    The series was that amazing.

But for people who didn't know it didn't matter. All they needed to know was that Shepherd was a long time friend of theirs that sheltered them and he was killed, making it really personal. Sure, people in the know would get more out of it but as a whole it worked on two levels.

I really like The Operative. He was just really cold. Hopefully this movie does well enough to warrant the rebirth of the series, or at least a sequel.

Just silence and a long, absent stare to follow. Same thing happens when Futurama is mentioned. I should just keep a magic eye nearby to put in front of me when it happens.
