Thread: Tom Dowd & the Language of Music

  1. Tom Dowd & the Language of Music

You probably don't know the name, I sure didn't, but everyone knows the things he worked on. Tom Dowd was working for Atlantic Records, and did pioneering work in binaural stereo recording, and later his design of the eight-track console. He worked with people like John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Otis Redding, Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers and so on.

Of particular note is his time with Eric Clapton, where Clapton tells in no uncertain terms that he didn't think anything of sound engineers before that. It goes through and shows how Tom Dowd mixed and engineered the reprise from Layla and it's some of the most interesting shit I've ever seen.

The home page and a trailer is here: http://www.thelanguageofmusic.com/ but you should check your cable schedule, it was in the rotation a bit ago on IFC or one of the pay cable sits.

If you are a fan of music it's a fantastic watch.

    10/10.
