But is that right god-given?
If they own the copyrights to the things people are using... then yes, yes they do have the right. They can step in, but they don't have the god given right to stopping anything that's for non-profit use.

You just can't work with a corrupt power. Besides it did enough damage to book writing in europe in the 1700s.Originally Posted by Dipstick

LOL. Yea, because the United States is the only country in the world with a copyright system.Originally Posted by voltz
Why dont you just take your delusions and idiocy and go to Canada or something? Youll fit in well there.
You seem to be confusing "product" with "license." If those guys wanted to make a game similar to Chrono Trigger then they can with no legal problems, Square doesn't hold a copyright on ideas. However, they took licensed property - specific designs, writing, characters, etc. - that was already owned by someone else and tried to use it for themselves. It's not a matter of who's making a superior product, it's a matter of protecting your own designs so that others can't steal them to do whatever they want with. Imagine what would happen to EA's football game sales if 989 and Sega had access to the Madden franchise name, most people buy games based on title, not manufacturer.Originally Posted by voltz
Maybe we'll see in the future some of this art resurface as the offical trigger remake. It'd be pretty sweet if the CT:R team ended up on the art/graphic side of that.
I can see why Square killed this fan project- it's just too good, as Yoshi said. They're afraid of being upstaged by a nonprofit group. But to truly justify this IMO, they'd need to show that they were working on an official version.
If I were the H.M.F.I.C., I'd have given them a crack at turning this into an official commercial project for Square/Enix prior to threatening a suit.
The CR team should've kept mum on the project until it was at 100%.
Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
why? so all their work would have just been thrown right back at them in a lawsuit in which maybe 10-30 random internet surfers find and look it over?Originally Posted by gameoverDude
Like someone else said, sure it looked nice, but it was obviously expected S-E would step in. With such talent they should have created their own original ideas.

jesus christ dude, calm down. it's a shitty 3d remake(yes, i've seen it) of a overhyped rpg for snes(yes, i've played it). square has every right to do this as it's THEIR intellectual property, and if you decide to boycott squaresoft products from now on because of it...then you're a moron.
btw; we all know that you wont really boycott, because just like every other square whore/fanboy, you'll continue to buy into the bullshit and keep giving them money to produce more lackluster titles(just like starwars fans do with lucas).
