It was there, but only in small, seperated doses that felt like they were spliced together with scenes from a totally different Seven rip-off. It's hard to build tension when you're constantly changing the channel back and forth between two movies.
But seriously,if they'd have gone that route this movie would've had a cheap 'Open Water', 'Blair Witch' feel to it.
No it wouldn't. Hell, as is they only had like five rooms and an outside shot of an apartment anyway, it's not like they were doing sweeping panoramic views of Germany or something.

This is, naturally, not counting how the car chase scene in Saw felt more low-budget than anything in Blair Witch.
I think we needed to see the back story, the other murders, Danny Glover going after this guy to get a scope, on how serious and fucked Adam and the doctor's situation was.Without seeing how they were captured, or what came before,(and even the why's as to them being captured) this thing would've had no substance IMO.
How did you make it through childhood with no imagination?
I mean its a movie. If the producers have money to spend to show us backstory, let them show it. I'd much rather see how the Doctors family was captured,etc.,etc. and how the orderly botched said capture than to just be told or have to assume how it happened.
For starters, they were all filmed like they were from a different movie. It honestly felt to me like all the backstory and outside-the-room scenes were made by a different director that had no clue what the other one was doing. There are good ways and bad ways to integrate multiple time flows and different viewpoints, and Saw used a lot of bad ones.

Considering the hopeless feel that Saw was obviously trying to go for, I think it would have been greatly in their benefit to have stuck more with the desolate room. Without jumping all over it would've been a greater concentration on the characters and their bleak surroundings which would have reenforced that feeling of no escape. If it was just the characters telling us their backstory then it would've come down to how much can we trust what they're saying to each other. *coughUsualSuspectscough* Just because a movie can show something doesn't mean it should show something, unless it's hysterical low-class trash like Wild Zero in which case go nuts.

Oh well, I guess they should've hired someone better.
And is anyone really confused by how the movie took you out of the room? I thought it flowed well in that regard, I was never lost.
It's not that I was lost when the movie left the room, it's that all the scenes outside of the room:
    a) removed all tension
    b) were often retarded

Ever seen Once a Thief? Absolutely god-awful, terrible movie (not even in a funny way), but there's a great scene where a villian orders a henchman to blow up a baking soda storehouse for the sole purpose of showing off to someone how it blows up.

  2. Watched it today, and I have to side with haters camp. First half was perfect: suspensefully, tense, disturbing, and then it all went down the hill.

And last 15 minuts were so laughably bad, I was in tears. Awesome acting from Cary Elwes, Danny Glover and whoever played the ordely. It was hillarious.

And final revelation was true WTF moment.

  3. Sorry Jetman, even Despair isn't siding with you.

  4. I thought it was entertaining. Dumb, and hilarious acting, but still fun.

  6. I just finished watching the movie last night and I have to say all in all it wasn't what I thought it would be, It had some really good parts though. I liked that at the end of the movie he is the one in the room! For those of you who haven't seen it sorry

  8. If movie sucks, I say it, and Saw indeed sucked.

dj was dissapointed as well. We were watching first half, and he was enjoying mind games, and setup, but then Cary Elwes started whining, and iwe all know what it became.

Its sad that this movie, which had alot of promise, had to end on shitty note.

  9. I loved it.

  10. not the worst ive seen in awhile, and had some pretty inventive ideas, but could have been so much better. especially in casting cary elwes

BTW the premise seems to be a mix of Cube and Takashi Miike's Audition
