Negative. I can think of at least one rally racing game that has random tracks: Top Gear Rally 2 on the N64. It was unlocked with the last series in the game and was really frustrating to deal with -- the CPU would race like it knew the track (because it did), so finishing well in that series was a real pain in the ass.

    [edit: How could I forget F-Zero X?]

Probably does not count, but V-Rally 2 on the DC and PSX had a track editor in the game. That was fairly cool actually; you could do quite a bit with it (it would autogenerate landscaping for you, and made it look fairly generic -- but at least you had a good deal of control over the actual shape of the course).

There are probably PC racing games with the above capabilities, but I do not know of them. Just showing that this is not a first in this genre. Hopefully they can get the randomly generated stages to not look like a set of randomly thrown together prefabricated stage parts (even if it was done that way, having enough random variables to subtly (or not so subtly) change the random parts.

Or I can go "ZOMG SHITTY SCREENCAPS" and be done with it.

It's been done before, and is never half as interesting as designed courses. F-Zero X has randomly generated courses, as does Turbo Prop Racing (on PSone).

  3. As long as there are properly designed set courses and the random thing is just an extra, I'm there.

Neither of which were programmed by the best racing company on the planet.

True, but Psygnosis isn't making Sega Rally 2005 either.

  6. Psygnosis still exists? I thought they became DMA or something. And my goodness, but those screens look bland. I'm getting a major R: Racing Evolution vibe here.

Yup - they're SCE Studio Liverpool now. Latest game is Formula 1 '04.
I have fury! In the last moments of the finale of the finale, when relief leads to negligence that begets rashness... That is when the comeback that faltered comes back and beats your pathetic comeback that I scoff at!

  9. Were they called something different during the 32 bit days?

I'm pretty sure they were Psygnosis until Sony chewed them up and swallowed them whole just before the PS2 was released.

They were bought up to ensure Wipeout Fusion was a PS2 exclusive, I believe.
