I thought the CG was rather well done in that scene so shaddap.

But at the same time I don't think using CG really ruins any flavour a movie has if the suspense has been raised significantly during the scene. If you're noticing no emotional attachment it could be that the director didn't enthrall you or that your cinicism towards CG kept you from getting involved.
That's pretty much it. I felt no emotional connection to Sky Captain (or Minority Report, since I just watched that one scene). If I had, that probably would have made the impact of the CG stunts more effective because the character that I was emotionally invested in would be in danger and I actually would have cared about what happened to them. A giant CG anvil could have fallen on Sky Captain and Polly and I wouldn't have given a shit.

As I said, the CG they did in Sky Captain had potential, and probably would have made an effective and exciting movie if the story/charactrers were fixed. While I dislike excessive CG, it does have its place and I certainly wouldn't mind the occasional widescale use of it like in SC. I'd just want to see it in a better movie.

If I sat there and said every stunt in Indiana Jones was choreographed and Indiana was never in any real danger it would've ruined the mood of it too.
Yeah, but there was an actual actor doing it in an actual real environment. Makes it much easier to suspend disbelief.

No it wasnt Alot of CG work in MR stood out and looked unnatural, including that particular scene.

I havent seen Sky Captain yet, and only can judge it by the pieces of it I've seen in trailers and clips, so I wont claim it is better than work in MR, yet.

But I wont call MR a pinacle of quality CGI work either

The way Kaminsky uses that type of weird grain to the movie lended itself well to the special effects. It was noticeable that it was a special effects scene but I didn't think that it was super fake looking the way Dolemite and yourself are saying it looked like.

  5. I should actually watch the whole movie and judge then, but I just thought the car scene looked like outtakes from the original Tron (okay, I'm exaggerating a little). Is MR a good movie?

I think the first 4/5ths of it are really great. Interesting, involving, etc. The last fifth gets very formulaic and rather predictable. It's worth watching tho. It's got some interesting ideas and execution. I like it.

Well, It is somewhat good. The premise is interesting, but pace is slow, and plot holes are plentyfull. Action is not exciting, and sfx are somewhat shoddy as I mentioned. Overal I pretty much hated it, but many people here seem to dig it quite a lot.

I would watch Last Samurai for my Cruise fix instead

I'm like that too. The way I feel is that a person doing something can make me think higher of it but it being CG doesn't make me think less of it, if you follow. I'll say that the fight scenes in Ong-Bak are incredible, in large part because of the knowledge that they're doing everything themselves, but I still also enjoy the fights in The One despite that just about every one of them utilizes CG.

With Sky Captain there were a couple scenes that looked really CG and a lot of times people were almost cut-outs on the backgrounds, but I was impressed with a number of scenes, a lot of the smaller indoor environments I would swear up and down were real if I didn't know better.

The One was a cool fucking movie. Didn't mind the CG there at all.
