Acclaim had no killer apps this generation that they were publishing. While publishers don't make the games, per se, they bully and strongly suggest items and features they wish to have in a game. Publishers like Acclaim give small teams deadlines too tight for the project to blossom, essentially smothering games like Legends of Wrestling and Turok. I perceived this information in the Acclaim bankruptcy thread where an ex-Acclaim employee complained of shoddy business practices by Acclaim.
I think a company like Ubisoft really see's gaming as a virtual goldmine, and with good reason -- it is. But in order to get a good return, the best return you can, you have to vary your titles. Have some killer games you poor money into like Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, and other titles like Beyond Good & Evil and Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu (shit) which you're a little more conservative with and hope for a good return. There's always bread and butter and then there's the desert (to a company).
I like EA because they're big enough to take risks on games and pick up the brunt of games like Burnout 3 if they're in trouble. They have 80 games released a year, and only need like 10 good sellers to make a return, which they automatically get with Bond games, The Sims and Madden.
So Opaque is right to be more optimistic because Ubisoft is publishing a game, because they typically bring out a good product. It may not be Halo 2, Link to the Past or Grand THeft Auto, but it's great.
