I quit a decent paying job ( God, I miss the weekly Best Buy runs)so that I could go back to school. It was a risk, but it had to be done - and I needed to avoid one of those mid-life crisis' - so in a way I AM trying to eventually improve my financial situation again. And yeah, I dont nearly play as much games as I'd like , due to school and work and trying to scrape out an existence. Ask those people who have LIVE and/or play SCPT and have me on their friends list how often I come on - next to never and its not because I dont want to

I always legally purchase games. The only thing I really DL is music. Which is probably still just as bad.

Im a grown man. I know what I'm doing. I'm not going to try and justify what it is Im doing. And Ill just have to pay the price if I get caught and own up to it like a man. <shrugs>

To each his own, ya know.

If you are buying all of your music and stuff - Rock On. Ive played the consumer game like we all have and have spent tons of cash on music, movies, and games. I just need a little break from that spending at this point.

But hey , you know how the saying goes - excuses are like assholes - everyones got em.

  2. Actually, you kinda buy a licence to play the game, not the game itself. it still remains the property of the developers.
Though I know that legally that's true, I decided years ago that it wasn't a rule I felt like playing by. If the Namco Secret Police want to reposess my copy of Katamari Damacy they're going to have one hell of a fight on their hands. I own it, I didn't license it, it's mine.

When half life CS first came, years ago, I went and bought it, but after moving house, it was lost, and so I downloaded it, but steam was a bitch and would not let me in with a generated serial. What is your opinion on that, if I were fined for downloading it? I bought it in the first place, at the same price of others, yet I cannot use it, which sucks.
I'm not sure what you think is so hard about this, but when you bought the game from the store you bought the CD's and that particular game. If you lose it, it's your fault. You have to buy another one.

I personally don't care about pirating. I don't care if you pirate or not, it doesn't bother me.

    Uh, contradicting statements?

  5. I think he meant that he legally purchases them, and just pirates as a last resort. Also, buying used isn't as "bad" as piracy, as the money used for that just goes towards the retail section of the industry, while buying new supports that section, the publishing, and the developing sections of it. Of course, then you have used games being sold as new, and lord knows if the money from those goes to the publisher, or just lines the pockets of the retailer.

  6. I was only make a point about that particular instance; but morally upon pirating it I feel it [EDIT- typo] not to be wrong, although I agree I was an idiot for losing it.
I disagree about pirating in general, apart from where stuff is unavailable over here, as mentioned previously; e.g., I downloaded HOTD as it was as US only release.
Main reason is against is that in the end you're screwing yourself, as less money for them means less research, which means a crappier future product.

Check the last couple of months of haul threads in Gaming discussion to see how little Ive contributed lately. The only game Ive bought recently is Guilty Gear XX Reload and I put a downpayment on HALO 2. And honestly, for as much stuff as I want ,thats probably all Ill be able to buy for the rest of the year.

That would still make the latter statement untrue, but I get your point. I'd like to point out that I'm not squeaky-clean myself. Anything that's available, I'll buy, but I use MAME for retro stuff that isn't being sold anymore. The way I see it, if the industry isn't selling the products anymore, they won't be making a profit on them. So getting in on the MAME love doesn't harm the industry. I've never pirated a game that is readily available to me for purchase.

  9. It's more fun to have all the original retro gear though; e.g., playing Mario 3 on a genuine NES/SNES is way better, if you can afford it and get hold of it.

I agree 100% with you there. Having the gear itself is awesome. I count most consoles as being available, since I can still get these 2nd hand quite easily. Most of the stuff I emulate are arcade games that are less-readily available, and very pricey (stuff like Esprade, for instance).

Jetman, I stand corrected. I must've blinked and missed that line. No harm done.
