Thread: Japan sucks

  1. I really dont get the majoras mask hate in thsi thread, while i loved oot, mask actually was more fun because the world seemd stranger, more unbalanced, and i loved the tiem travel thing, some hated it, but i thought it was more succesful in introducing scheduals into a game than shenmue was, despite the fact that shen talked more about the scheduals. Its funny with zeldas, each tiem they try soemthign new, be it time travel or the boat, people bitch that they dont like it because its not as fun as oot, its not supposed to be oot2 its something that has a similar playstyle, since oot's playstyle pretty much defined 3d action games for that generation and is still being ripped off today, with some interesting ideas. Again, to each their own, i dont feel the need to compare games, i like asian and western games about equaly, and that works for me.

  2. I like Majoras Mask in design and the unique ideas presented in the game, But I just found it a pain to have to constantly have the time on my mind. The game is good, but I just could not really put the effort into it. I also love KotoR and OoT. I also think that Japan makes just as many good games as the West. I guess I am in the minority, which is too bad.

    Ditto.

  4. They don't even dominate platformers anymore (see: BG&E/PoP). Am I missing something?
Forgot to add Jak and Daxter, Sly cooper and Rachet & Clank to that list

I see more commercials for Sony games than either to be honest.

This article also fails to make any mention of the rapidly expanding handheld market (which is expected to make the biggest gains of any market in the coming years) which coincidentally Japanese publishers still rule and EA's failed to find a strong footing in. Namco, Sega, Nintendo, Konami, Capcom & Square Enix can all claim GBA million sellers (often multimillion sllers)... which is something EA, UbiSoft, Activision, Nokia, Eidos, Microsoft, Midway & almost every other large western publisher can't (outside Atari due to DBZ and THQ thanks to Nickelodeon/Sonic). With PSP and DS just around the corner (and nearly all high profile software for them hailing form Asia) I expect this trend to continue.

It's not from Japan, a country that sucks.

What about MMO, sports, FPS and RTS? None of these genres is even decently represented by the Japanese.

Japan dominates JRPGs. And fighters (which would count for something if this were 1991). And third-person crapticular (haw) action-fests (see: DMC). They don't even dominate platformers anymore (see: BG&E/PoP). Am I missing something?
Weird, cutesy Japanese games. Japan is better at making them. Dating sims, train manager sims, horse racing/managing sims, pachinko games... Japan absolutely kicks the shit out of the west in these areas.

  8. HK-47 is the homicidal drone from KOTOR, not some simple minded Japanese cartoon.

  9. Yuck

I think that I am the only person that seems bored to shit with most "new" game ideas. I don't give a crap what country they come from. Seriously, most of the lists that people are putting out in this thread for ZOMG!-awe-inspireing-new-games-coming-out lists NONE interst me. So far the best games this year include:

    Katamari Damacy
    Gradius 5

KD, took me by suprise as to how fun and original it was, and G5 took a solid design and mixed it up a bit (I am a shmup fan give me a break).

Any game that totals out to more than 10 hours does not excite me. Sports games are a snore (I don't like sports in general). Most games that come out now lack high-level play (high level play includes the offer for self set goals such as time limits and grade systems, not multiple endings). I think "countries suck" more than anything. The thing is the only things I have on my want list right now are some bemani pre-orders, but these are the same formula that they have been for 4 years now or more.

Why this conversation degraded to the point of KotR vs Zelda 3d is stupid. Neither has intersted me as much as Morrowind did. THAT was truely original and open ended, I sunk over 200 hours into the game and never even beat the main mission. Even with all the flaws it stacked up to my enjoyment better than any RPG in the past 5 years. Nothing else comes close this generation.
