Thread: Japan sucks

  1. Even though the Japanese game market in decline, one noticable improvement lately has been the flow with which Japanese games have made it to US shores. Five years ago, it would have been extremely unlikely that games such as Katamari Damacy, Shin Megami Tensei, many of the Nippon Ichi games, and others.

Maybe there's less reason to import because the Japanese market is waning, but at least there's less reason to import because a higher ratio of the good/interesting Japanese games being released here.

Japanese gaming in the US is not terrible yet, at least from my perspective.

Thats not true. Two Persona games came out for PSX. Oddball games like PaRappa the Rapper and Incredible Crisis and Power Shovel came out for PSX. I dont believe that Tactics Ogre was ever released in America until the PSX version.

Youd be a lot more correct if you said that these games would have never come out for SNES and Genesis. And they didnt. Sony, for all of their supposed destroying and raping of the soul of gaming, managed to bring over or get other developers to bring over, these nichey games.

  3. Tactics Ogre was in the U.S. first on the SNES, not the PSX. And it would be accurate (to some extent, if nothing else) to say that these types of games have come over in spite of Sony.

  4. Yeah, I probably should have compared that from 10 years ago, and I was thinking of the Persona games even though I neglected to mention them (long day). Anyways, I stand by the point that an even higher ratio of Japanese games worth taking interest in (this excludes stuff like dating sims) are reaching US shores. Chalk it up to a general increase in Japanese stuff among US youth, such as anime and manga and crap like that.

To clarify, my point was that there's next to nothing I want to import this generation, unlike the PSX/Saturn/DC days. This isn't due to a reduced interest in Japanese games on my part, but rather nearly everything I want from Japan is being released here.

Also, I agree with you about Sony. Although the occasionally make questionable decisions (Metal Slug 3), for the most part the PS/PS2 has been one of the best platforms for niche games. Moreso than the Dreamcast or GameCube. And they didn't kill 2D after all.

Okay, so I forgot about the SNES version. Fair enough. But my point still stands.

Considering that Sony in fact approves each and every PlayStation game to ever come out, I would say that you are very very wrong. They have final veto power and have exercised that before (with that stupid Mega Man kart game, or whatever). Fact is, you just couldnt get oddball games like those on the SNES. I could even list more, like Thousand Arms. The PlayStation opened up the market for these games, that is a fact.

You are misinformed.. Ogre Battle definitely did come out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Tactics Ogre remained a Super Famicom exclusive. (At least... til it was ported with remixed music and voice acting for the jSS, and ported with load time for the PSX).

  7. Ah, just mixed up my Ogres. Thanks for that info.

You fight like a six year old girl, I hope you know that.

  9. How about we don't fight at all and have civil conversations without the personal attacks.

    That goes for everybody.

  10. I actually decided to delete my post considering this is Gaming Discussion and I don't want to derail the thread.
