Thread: Games now are better than ever

    Diff, your thread was essentially based entirely on your opinion. You seem like a fairly intelligent person, so I would assume that you know that a discussion with that kind of lead-in would begin and end with that. Your opinion. It begins and ends with that because simply, if anyone asserts thier own opinion, you state your opinion again to counter. Its not even a discussion. I suppose it would be valid as a conversation, but an entirely uninteresting one. The only reasoning I can see behind it is that you find pleasure in poking a hornets nest, and that just seems kind of sad.

    That said, I suppose I should take the bait myself...

    In short, you saying others are wrong, is wrong. You saying that games are better, is wrong. To a certain extent anyway. Games in general are different and thats really about it. Unless you'd like to share with the rest of the class your wonderful new formula that quantifies a games quality. I assume you will, and it will be something to the effect of:

    (if game == I like)
    {
    then game == better;
    };

    Am I right?

    I could go off on any number of tangents to counter every statement you make in your original post. Those counters Im guessing, will be countered with the same finesse you used to create the original post. Which begins the cycle anew. I guess what Im trying to say is, it's odd how you find these new games so interesting, but the game you seem to be playing the most is on a message board.

    i wish i could post like this. its like he snuck into my head and stole my thoughts.

  2. I must admit Eightbit had a nice line right there.

    Now we got that, and a whole lot more. Games are more immersive, atmospheric, interesting, have a whole shitload more content, appeal to a much wider range of audiences, and more replay value than ever... and they cost less.

    I spent $40 on Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne and Ive already played it more than probably my entire SNES library (40 games). And I bet all of you can find at least one game that has come out in the past 5 years that you can say that about. if not more than one (I could also say it about TFC and CS).

    Why people feel the need to go back to the days of 16-bit, filled with games that all looked the same, played pretty much the same, catered to the same audience (of little kids), and had absolutely zero replay value, I have no idea. So anyone who wants these stupid games from the past is wrong, in short.

    edit: I made the topic before I wrote anything ^__^, but here it is

    LAAAAAAWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Which is what I was saying but clearly I was misunderstood. Games like SMB1 to 3, Yoshi's Island, the Metroid, Mega Man, Space Invader games, whatever, are all still great games, but when it comes down to it, I'd rather play some of the stuff today since it's passed its time.

    Who called them crap? I said they're no longer as fun compared to the stuff that's coming out now. Honestly, I wont lie to you and say I'd rather turn on Pole Position over PGR2. Yes, I'll most likely get a kick out of it again, but no, I wont enjoy it as much. I would also rank a couple games over some of the stuff today, but as a whole view of the industry, everything is coming out bigger and better.

    The way you worded it made it sound like anyone enjoying a past game over a modern one is nostalgia-blinded.

    I love being in a public area or transport and hearing people say how some odd 16-bit game is better than Halo or PGR2. Excuse me, you're wrong. It's 2004, so sinking your hooks into nostalgic games isn't cool anymore.

    A dead give away is the abuse (by which I mean use) of throw-back 90's slang.

    I think the biggest difference, is that when these games came out, they innovated. Most games you play today, borrow more than one gameplay mechanic, that was introduced back in the ealier days of gaming. Does better graphics and sound make these games better? Only when the experience is more akin to a first time, rather than the 20th time.

    Sure there's a good portion of games coming out today, that provide a great time; but there are so many games from the past, that people have'nt experienced, that would still offer a unique gaming experience today.
