The short answer: The show's background, supposedly not really, yes.

The long answer: The ARG pretty much spills the beans as to what's going on. In my previous 'cryptic because I can't get my point across' post, I was kinda annoyed by this.

More or less, we find out what Dharma was trying to do, what Dharma stands for, and now, since the Initiative failed, what is being done to solve the problem that Dharma set out to solve. It doesn't say exactly, but it hints at the often tauted virus and a lot of death, while the original plan was by science, and science alone.

It also gives details, or outright explains, the numbers' significance, the radio tower, the point of each hatch on a whole, what the Dharma acronym stands for, what the Black Rock is, and a ton of insight (but nothing really concrete) on what we can expect the Others to be revealed to be this season.

You missed a lot of spoiler info for the show, but your show-watching experience is probably better off. If you still have questions when the show is done (i.e. they don't reveal all of what they did in the ARG), you can go back to it.

Since the ARG was only aimed at the 'hardcore' Lost fans (so says this Time article I read), missing the ARG won't leave you with gaps between season 2 and 3.

If you want what the ARG revealed flatout, look below, but be warned they are beefy spoilers.

    - Dharma stands for Dept. of hurisitics and research into material applications, or 'the one true way', in the direct definition of the word.

    - The Dharma Initiative was created to solve the problem created by the Valenzetti Equation. Simply, Anzo Valenzetti, a mathematican in the 70s, developed this equation which spells out the time of the end of the human race, and gave a timeframe of years and months. The core values in the equation are, wait for it.... 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42. Each value tied to an aspect of science or civilization. In order to stop the end of the world, it was determined research must be done on each aspect in order change the value, and therefore throw off the equation. So, as an example and not something ever mentioned or hinted at, but let's say the electromagnetic value was 15. Well, the researchers in the Swan were working towards making 15 into 14, or another value in the scope of the equation. What exactly would change the value (a discovery or process, it's never said) was convienently scrambled out of the Sri Lanka video.

    - The radio tower was a beacon for communication between Hanso/DeGroots and the researchers on the island. It broadcasted the numbers only, as to keep the islands function a secret.

    - The Black Rock is Hanso's grandfather's slave ship. Knowing this, the Adam corpse found early in season 1 is probably Grandpa Hanso.

    - It is said flatout that the Dharma Initiative failed by Thomas Mittlewerk, a character in the ARG. He is revealed at the end to being the guy in charge of the Hanso Foundation, and making all the bad stuff happening, not Hanso. You can infer that Mittlewerk is the guy in the charge of the Others, or at the least, the one who made the Others do what they do. He hints in the video that they are trying to craft a virus which will change the numbers. A lot of deaths are hinted, as well as other things. From there, it can be hinted that the Others' objective is the same as Mittlewerk's. Hence why the Others are quoted by Henry Gale to be 'the good guys'. Ergo, all the bad shit they're doing? It's trying to change the equation and save the world.

You can learn almost everything that matters for the show by watching the Sri Lanka video posted above.

Now, that's not to say you'll learn everything about the ARG. It won't give any info on the characters, the puzzles, the experience itself, really. However, if you don't care about any of that (And trust me, it was all pretty shitty) then the Sri Lanka video should be enough.

  3. Tonight's the night.

  4. WHOOP WHOOP!

  5. Although I'm waiting, if you want to spoil yourself, or know what we're talking about tomorrow and can't watch tonight, apparently they showed the season premiere in Hawaii over the weekend, and there are full reports on the entire episode if you're inclined.

  6. It'll be good to get back to the island tonight.

  7. I need to finish up the season 2 box before this airs... only 3 eps to go.

  8. I'm still debating whether to watch the Sri Lanka video from the Lost Experience and the final video from the Lost Experience.

  9. They don't ruin anything, do it, pussy.

    PS. 5 hours!

So I decided to read what portnoyd posted and watched both videos. Interesting stuff I guess.

PS. Living on the west coast sucks - 7 hours and 30 mins!
