I might be two seasons, but it's only been about 2 months on the island. How else would you introduce characters?
By maybe trying to integrate their stories into the happenings on the island, besides just being like "hey, it's the end of the episode, how about we just throw these 2 new characters in without introductions of any sort and have them speak a few lines so if we want we can develop their stories"

Exactly. Maybe have them walk up to someone in the camp like Rose and gently introduce themselves by helping out someone, kinda like that Neil Frogurt guy from the Rose & Bernard ep, instead of:
Nikki: 'Hey, is he all right? Where's Jack?'
Locke: 'STFU GTFO of my way bitch'
I finally caught up, watched season 2 last week and what's out of 3 this weekend.
Ya, they're still on Namek. But it looks like Goku might arrive by the end of the season.
According to this article, the shows' ratings are dropping very steadily and the author proposes it's because people who watch the show are tired of waiting for the plot to progress. I'm starting to agree:
"Why ABC's Lost is losing it."

The first three episodes were well done, entertainment wise. Loved seeing Sawyer smack Pickett around and great to see Locke as a hunter again. The opener showing the Others' village was a nice tease.
However, I'm going to have to say I am no longer buying into what the producers and writers are selling. I used to find the Podcasts with Cuse and Lindelof entertaining and insightful. Now I get the impression that they are full of it and that instead of being sincere about driving the plot forward, they don't have as much story to work with as they say and are just stretching the show out for as long as they can. At this point IMHO, flashbacks and 2 month time passage are just a safety net they are using so they have an excuse to move as slowly as they can while revealing what very little they have to begin with.
The producers keep whining "Oh, we don't want the show to last beyond 5 years. If ABC tries to stretch it out we will quit." Well, if that is true then they had better use this season to start finishing off at least part of whatever main arc they have. Otherwise, they will be just as guilty of milking the show as ABC will ever be. I also find it funny that several times on the podcasts they have talked smack about the X-Files being on the air too long and getting confusing, "...we are big X-Files fans but we are determined not to let that happen." Oh really?
For prewritten/arc based shows I use Babylon 5 as the standard. That too was a show steeped with complicated characters with dark pasts, lots of mysterious antagonists and even a few "monsters." But by the end of the 3rd season, you knew what the "monsters" were, their objectives and their motives all of which caused the story to evolve nicely into new territory.
Example: One of my favorite scenes in Babylon 5 was when Sheridan met the heavies for the Shadows and basically told them "You either tell me what you are up to, why you are doing these things or you might as well just kill me" until they relented and told him their plans and WHY they thought he should join them. On Lost, Jack meets 2 of of the heavies. Instead of drilling "Henry" and Juliet with questions (when they aren't even torturing him!) "WHY whould I believe you when you say you're the good guys, what's your offer? Otherwise shoot me"....we get the main villian showing him a clip of the '04 world series and acting like that is enough to get the main "hero" to bite.
"I'm Ben Limus. We're the good guys and we can help you. And to show this, I will prove that the Red Sox finally won."Lame. This is not like the time when they met Beard-O in the forest at gunpoint. This time, Jack had every opportunity to go toe to toe with weasel boy. But instead, he asks ONCE, Ben says "Ah, ah, ah. Not yet. Jack's response to an opportunity? Sitting in the corner and pouting like a baby because he's annoyed that he's still captured and misses his crappy ex wife. Lame. This is why you see "Sayid for leader!" sigs all over the Lost forums.
I will still watch the show but I remember reading a Newsweek article last year which summed it up nicely: "Lost is an entertaining show as long as you don't try to make sense of what is going on." As a big sci fi and mystery fan, I know you need to be patient and I will give this season the benefit of the doubt. But I think the most "major" thing that will happen this year will be one of the two new characters from ep 3's end being randomly killed off ala Ana and Libby.
Not saying "nothing ever happens on the show." OTOH I will have to agree with stormy in that a good mystery show at least gives you some payoff now and then and Lost is starting to fail big time. Unless I know what the motives of the Others are by mid-end of this year (or just one decent explanation of any one of the Island's elements), then I will just be a casual fan until the final ep and will only watch episodes based on whether or not the spoilers sound interesting.

Nice post, BTW. I don't have too much to add, but I agree with 90% of it.
I agree pretty much 100% with what you said, especially after last weeks episode. I still love the show, but after a filler episode 4 episodes into the season, I can't help but understand and agree with where both stormy was coming from, and your post.
