I know people like to think California is all smart and enlightened and shit, but its really not. It has like the 48th best schools in the country. Everyone here is just fucking brainwashed by the hippies in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The direct democratic system the government uses here has doomed the state (the supposedly enlightened people just put like another $5 billion of debt onto the state when they cant pay fucking police officers). It's all ideology, really. New Jersey is actually a far smarter state, with much better schools (and my county went Bush holla).
