Shenmue was 6 years ago.
In any case, Sega lost their ass on Shenmue and I'm sure that in some Japanese board room somewhere they somehow came to the conclusion that it would be a commercial success. I doubt that they were producing art for art's sake.

Exactly what I'm saying. There's been no point in the industry's history when people cared more about making quirky fun titles than making money, it's just that quirky titles sold well until better games came along.
