Even though Shenmue is about martial arts and Lan di looks like a cooler version of Lau, it probably does share more with Zelda than it does with VF. Both Shemue and Zelda are in the same genre. Take away one one one competitive fighting and you dont have VF anymore. VF is all about the big fight.

Yes but you can see and feel VF in Shenmue's fighting despite being a different genre. Shenmue shares things in common with Zelda like exploring and talking to NPCs but those aren't things Zelda invented and are basic adventure/RPG traits. Nothing specific to Zelda was taken and incorporated into Shenmue as far as I can tell which is why I think it's odd that he mentioned it.

IBTN. Comparing Shenmue with Zelda is like comparing Madden to Mario. It ain't happening.

  5. Shenmue had a time system involving the enviroment and Zelda OoT was one of the games that invented that. that why I involved it. I will admit its small but time is important in shenmue.

There's actually some striking parallels between Majora's Mask and the Shenmue games in terms of NPC routines and game progression. Indeed Clocktown is like a focused, mini-Yokosuka almost.

Yeah, time is important in Shenmue. It's one of the reasons the game reminds me a lot of The Last Express. That game had both NPCs that reacted to time and fighting that resembled Shenmue's QTEs.

Interesting. I never thought of that. It's almost certainly a coincidence though as the games were released pretty close to each other.

Yeah, the games were in R&D around the same time too though Shenmue's a little older probably.

  9. Wasn't Majora's Mask released in April, 2000? How could it be an influence on a game released in October, 1999?

    Edit: Japanese Release date(s) above.

No one's saying MM influenced Shenmue (or vice versa), only that it's interesting they developed somewhat similar design mechanics in parallel. Both games were deep into development before they were unveiled.
