How?
Kerry/Edwards won the 85% of the liberal vote and 55% of the moderate vote. They got killed in the conservative vote (85% for Bush/Cheney), who comprised 36% of the total (5% up from 2000).
That's what made the difference in this election.
I don't think an Edwards/Gephardt ticket would have boosted turnout among liberals any more than Kerry/Edwards did. This was a partisan election, not a race to the middle like 2000, and I don't see how any other Dems besides Bill Clinton could have fought this battle any better.
