Thread: Hands on the DS

  1. Yeah, sorry. I just finished this thread.

    It was way worth it.

  2. This thread is fucking goddamn hilarious. I love TNL.

  3. I saw a coupon in the new GMR where you trade in your old GBA and 3 GBA games and they'll give you $50 trade. So if you still have one of those old GBAs and 3 crappy games I guess this would be the time to get rid of them. Myself I sold my old one with all my games and made way more money that way but to each his own I guess.

  4. Tried the DS at a special event today. Here are my first impressions.

Metroid: I had some serious control issues, and I tried each of the 5 setups the game offers. The one that worked best for me was the one without the stylus. It uses the d-pad for movement and the four buttons on the right for aiming. I don't think FPS games on portables, and Metroid didn't make me change my opinion. I had fun with the morph ball challenge.

Feel the Magic: Played a parachute mini game that was lots of fun. Also tried the shopping cart event. This game is ideal for a quick gaming session. Easy to pick up and very enjoyable.

Mister Driller: Didn't really use the stylus when I played it. So for me it was the same as before. Still as good though.

Mario 64 DS: Played single player. Kind of awkward at first when using the touch screen to move your character. You can use the d-pad, but your character will only walk. Didn't try other control setups (don't know if they are any alternatives)

Tiger Woods 2004: Why they used version 2004 is beyond me, but anyway EA did a good job on this one and it makes good use of the touch screen. The swinging motion takes some getting used to, but it works.

I tried that cell phone strap with the little ring, and let's just say I wasn't convinced.

Bottom Line: I'm sticking to my plan of getting it once the PSP comes out, and the price goes down. I would say that problems with the stylus arise when your left hand has to do something important, like jumping or shooting, using the L trigger. The DS shows great potential, and I'm sure we'll start seeing very innovative stuff next year.

  5. I played it yesterday, too, and I was impressed.

I have no qualms with the Metroid stylus control scheme, but that's probably because the DS is constantly in one position in the kiosk. It was easy to aim and shoot, and the graphics were pretty nice. The only problem I had was was that the MAP is displayed on the bottom screen, so you need to stop to see where you're going and even then the map isn't very descriptive. The map doesn't flesh out as you go about, you have the whole thing right from the beginning, so it's a little confusing when you go into rooms with multiple doors.

It made me realize that playing with the touch screen IS fun, and it makes excited to see what other kinds of games developers will come out with that utilize the touch screen.

    IAWTP.

The Metroid demo was fun to try out, but the only game I would buy at launch is Mario 64, which I can just get months later when good games start showing up for this thing.

My days as a blind Nintendo early adopter are gone (unless someone gets it for me for Xmas =D )

There's too much other console/pc goodness to devour to justify spending 150 dollars for a lineup of pittance.

  8. I was able to play the DS today at Best Buy, and aside from being overjoyed that my bifocal lens works just fine with it (whew!), I loved the Metroid Prime Hunters demo. The stylus works pretty well, and the d-pad is bliss. I can't wait to play GBA games with this d-pad.
