Knowing 3d Realms though, they'll bring out the announcement soon that they switching over to the Source engine soon anyways,
Looking better then HL2 wouldn't be that much of an accomplishment these days. The HL2 engine started development well over three years ago and DNF supposedly started on their own engine a year or two ago. HL2 looked great when the previews come out, now it looks good, comparable to Doom 3 and will be knocked out of the top graphical department when the next cycle of games comes out.

Keep in mind there's different styles of graphics too, I would say BF2 graphics are close to HL2 but it's a completely different style.

Some day in the future, Time-Life books will offer a series of "classic" PC games collected into a 20 DVD volume set. They will then run ads on cable featuring a grizzled old grandfather and his grandson walking along the street, and the first words out of the grandson's mouth will be, "Grampa, what's Duke Nukem?".

The Grandfather will then get a far away look in his eye, and then a tear will be shed.

It's the best looking game currently on the market. I think that rates better than "good."

"Great" to me would be better then games that are to be released but are currently being previewed. I think Doom 3 graphics are comparable but they're a completely different style but I might give HL2 the higher rating if it came down to it. For games currently out, the graphics are "great" but not a game out or coming out that has been previewed has not even the slightest amount of shit on Unreal3, it might be quite sometime before we see it in action though.

I'm going to have to get around to getting HL2, just spent $400 on one thing, so much stuff to buy

From a technological standpoint, I'd put Doom 3's visuals slightly over HL2, but I would sure as hell rather be looking at HL2. The visual design is perfect.

Kinda like Ico, I guess. It's simply amazing to look at.

  7. Halflife kicks the crap out of Doom 3. Okay, that's not true. But it's a LOT easier to make things look great in shadow than in broad daylight, which Doom 3 didn't do in a totally believable manner. I also think for graphics you have to factor in the design of the weapons, trace fire, enemies (which Doom 3 does a terrible job at. OMG Flying skulls with mandibles!), and even the scope effects.

In every sense of those, Halflife 2 beats Doom 3 hands down.

  8. Something Awful has a great bit on the situation.
In an effort to actually help dear George I have constructed a few pre-scripted scenarios I feel would be marked improvements over the suggestions he is getting.
A Pig Cop is in a back alley with a stripper and he starts to rape her and says something like "Give me the sugar babies" and she screams and blood shoots out of her crotch. Then another Pig Cop that is dressed like a woman comes into the alley and gets mad and she eats the hooker and punches the other Pig Cop and knocks him out. So she pulls the pants off the Pig Cop who is knocked out and she has a huge schlong!! And she says "ROFLMA Pigs In a Blanket!" and then she starts raping the original Pig Cop in the butt! And blood is shooting everywhere and then the EDF soldiers come in on those ropes from a helicopter and they say "Groovy!" and shoot the girl Pig Cop in her face and it EXPLODES. Then the other Pig Cop wakes up and grabs its butt in surprise and starts crying and all of the EDF soldiers laugh and high-five. Then you (DUKE) can shoot the Pig Cop who is crying or you can just laugh or whatever.

It's not just the art. Doom 3 has alot more going on rendering-wise, but because of that it's really limited. HL2 might not have the amazing lighting model of Doom 3, but it can toss around a dozen super-detailed enemies around with physics on everything. Doom 3 simply can't handle high-polygon models, big daylight environments, and alot of on-screen action without choking. So it's really just pushing different limits in terms of technology.

  10. But can the source scale down to a Voodoo2 like Doom 3 can?

    I think not.

    Winner: Doom
