Hardcore fight fans should still keep tongue in cheek for this one, but the fact is that Budokai is slowly becoming a more technically pleasing fighter, while retaining the old Dragon Ball verve.
Apparently, both IGN and Gamespot (8.0 and 8.2 respectively) made alot of mention that while the series was fun yet shallow, by this third rendtion it has really grown into a more serious fighter. Teleport counters, beam struggles, hyper moves, some new "dragon rush combos", the quick air battles of the show, all made it in.

Lots of fighters, a story mode ALOT like Mortal Kombat: Deception (3d plane exploring finding new fighters and moves), and the claim that this game is finally the one true Dragonball Z game to do the series justice.

Not to mention it pulls fighters from DBZ, the DBZ movies, and DB:GT.

I'm probably the only one who bought it (I liked Budokai alot, espically the ability to customize all your fighters, so a highly improved Budokai is interresting) but hopefully maybe someone else will check it out.

In IGN's eyes, the first game got a 6.2, second got a low 7, while this got an 8.0, so definately some improvement.

Only one low score brings it down, all the other reputable sites give it an 8.0 or higher. I haven't yet played it, but hopefully this will be a starting point for people who have interest at all (And let's keep the trolling to a minimum... if you don't like DBZ, just don't post)

  2. I saw a commercial for this last night. It looks really nice in action. I used to like DBZ a lot, but I got really burned out on it, due to overexposure, maybe. Reading the manga again in Shonen Jump has brought my interest back to some degree. The last DBZ game I bought was Legends on Saturn, so I might give this a try when I have the cash.

  3. Damn. I was going to make a thread for this back when I was doing a weeklong overtime on it.

Okay, so I hate DBZ, but this game is in fact pretty fun. The fighting is still Tekken for retards, but the 3 different ways to defend youself (The 3S Parry, the timed-block and the standard defense), all the different systems involved in the fight (Projectile Battles, cinema-style sequences, transformations) and the awesome environments totally takes your mind off that one simple fact.

There was a span of about, 2 weeks where at lunch time in the Atari offices we stopped playing 3S and GGXX just to spend some more time to settle some DBZ3 disputes. It's really just that fun. Granted, it'll never in a million years replace those titles mentioned, but it's a pretty good distraction.

    Agreed.

The power beam struggles, the final attacks, the story mode, everything feels just like DBZ this time.

Basacially, if you're ever seen it on the show, you can do it here. Parrying peoples attacks so every punch misses, and watching as they miss you every time has that special feeling to it.

Then you teleport behind them, hit them, and launch a giant fireball at their ass.

And if none of your friends want to play it with you, well, the single player mode is absoulutely huge, with a shitload of special things to find. Plus, for the DBZ fans, there's a nod to DB and DB:GT in alot of the places.

Definately lives up to my expectations so far, I'm having a blast with it. Sure, it's not fighter of the year, but it never tries to be, it just offers that same experience and feeling you get watching DBZ characters kick ass and blow up planets

  5. It has to be better than Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament.

It is, we have it in the interactive at work. Lots of fun.

Why the fuck would you waste memory space on goddamned Nappa, though? Who even cares about him?

  7. That or Raditz. They just don't belong anymore.

  8. The most played characters were always Baby Buu (Combo city) and Hercules...because he has a jet pack to fly.

The single player mode is HUGE with like, 6 different paths for every character just about. I know it was Hell to test for Vegeta since he has like 50 million different ways to go through story mode.

    Truth.

It's at least twice as big as Mortal Kombat: Deception's story mode.

And that's just for Goku 0_o Having multiple costumes for everyone is a huge plus too.

Yea but they are fun to fuck around with and use.

Cell Jr and the Saibamen, though, that shit can go.

Still no Burter and Jeice make me sad

Hell yeah, Mr. Satan is in it.

If the Great Saiya Man is in it, I'll run out and buy it.
