Sure, they've been running their business like jackasses since the day the 16-bit era ended, but I do see some positive things happening that tell me a light went off at Nintendo.
They're aware they got creamed this gen because they were sandwiched - didn't have the best software lineup, didn't have the best hardware. The 1st one's out of the question, but they're comitted to launching after PS3 to ensure they have the best technology next gen - that's a must.
They know they'll be forced out of the market if they continue to cater to a single demographic - you see that reflected in their new sex & drugs ad campaign, their giving Link an older look, and positioning Metroid as a major franchise intended to appeal to people over the age of 7.
Nintendo's always been capable of putting out well made games - they're committed to what has to be the most thorough testing cycle in the industry. Their problem in the last few years is that they've been making really good games for 3 year olds.
I guess you can look at Mario Sports, Wind Waker and Sunshine and say it's evidence the company is bereft of ideas, but they have to know they need to do far more than just show up from here on in - first party products have to carry the entire console, and sell people on the next one as well. If there's still gas in the tank, you'll probably see it in this game.

I know it's a small gripe, but that kind of takes me out of it. Even if they didn't do anything but slashing sounds, and no accompanying graphical effects, I would have been pleased.
