Thread: Zelda 2005 New Pictures

  1. Finally it looks like we might have some jump action.
At almost the exact mid-point of the trailer, Link is Z-locked on an enemy up on a pillar, some crawly enemies approach from behind and Link does a back sommersault over 'em. Yea!

    Ha!, so true.

  2. When Nintendo tried to change the style and look of Wind Waker (yeah,I know, it had the same controls too....minus the boat thing..but still baby steps...) 80% of gamers bitched about it because it was kiddie and didnt "look" like Zelda.
I guess there will always be haters no matter what.If you dont want to play it because of certain similarities, whatever, dont.I'll play it because of those same similarities that I enjoyed in all of the other Zelda games, and I predict have a hell of a time doing it.
I thought Wind Waker looked wonderful, and had some the best art design and graphics ever. It looked exactly like Link to the Past would in 3D, which is a damn fine achievement for the artists. I really wouldnt mind more Zeldas, or Marios, that look like it. But the gameplay was in autopilot, with no wit or imagination or creativity, all the things that made Link's Awakening (my favorite in the series) so good. It was a boring retread of Ocarina of Time, at best.

As for the control... its stiff and awkward and clumsy. The strafing, rolls, lunges, etc. all work but its lame and not immersive. It was a workable solution to a tough problem back in 1998 but even back then it felt like a hack - no jump button? Come on. Now, Im pretty sure they can do something better now but its clear they arent.

There isn't anything wrong with the control scheme. But, if you're in the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" mindset, you might as well just not make games. There are always ways to improve and always ways to make things more interesting and fresh. That's what got people excited about this game in the first place when they saw the E3 trailer: it looked fresh, new and awesome.

Really, what's going to make this so different from Wind Waker apart from the graphics? Obviously there might be more we don't know, but that trailer showed a whole lot more of the same old shit.

What does this have to do with anything? You're generalizing a lot of the people that don't like Zelda anymore based on Wind Waker's graphical style, which, if you didn't get the memo, is a dead and tired topic that we've all moved on from and have accepted. The main issue with Wind Waker anymore is the fact that it was a terrible game.

If it's more of the same, I won't. And I'm sure I'm not alone, and that's not the sort of reaction Nintendo needs these days when they're losing fans every week because of their rehashes, gimmickry, and general apathy towards everything those former fans want.

Eh, I just refreshed myself with OOT, and realized you could do the somersault back then too.

just to beat the dead horse, I've got to add:
If I can't jump on command, anytime I want - y'know, like to break up the monotony of traversing the area map, like with a little hop, skipping, and jumping - then I really can't be convinced or entertained that I am controlling a charater in a 3-d world.

Well, man, I dont know how much more originality you can throw at a Zelda game ( I guess that's why I'll never make games) - I mean there's only so much stuff a man-sized wood nymph in a fantasy world can do.I guess they could give him fairy wings of flight ( Please God, no), or more fight moves ala Dante in DMC? Like I said my originality tank is all dried up atm,and Nintendo gets paid to make these games so I sure as shit wouldnt complain if they threw some more innovation at it - and always hope they do - but I'm not heartbroken and pissed if they dont....So maybe I fall in with the herd on this one, but you're right in that if Nintendo wants to bring different gamers into its fold again it will have to innovate at some level.I mean the new Resident Evil is a great example of how something can be turned around and made better so....

It has to do with CHANGE,and changing a formula of a game around and make it different to the point of keeping some gamers away. To ME personally I didnt see a difference. Link has always been a little fucking kid since the first game (except for half of Ocarina),and the look of the game was all that changed. To the "herd" though weaned off of GTA's and more "serious" games it was an affront. But fuck em, they're loss and punishment for their own superficialism. And, yeah I guess I didnt get that specific memo that we cant bring up major topics concerning older games, next time Ill just use a funny acronym like TSWWS - "That Stupid Wind Wanker Shit" , or WWOFFK- " Wind Waker Only Fun For Kids".
I didnt think it was a terrible game. It just seemed like it was missing a lot. Like Mzo said it needed more dungeons, and the whole treasure hunt for Tri-Force pieces/maps/etc. on the ocean did bore the hell out of me.There was room for improvement and it could have been better.

People are different. Its the fan's like you that demand difference. And that's cool, because Nintendo can bring it, if they just put their minds to it.( I hope)
In the meanwhile while you're waiting for that, I'll play some of this Zelda and
have my fun with it.Wouldnt want Nintendo thinking fans had lost ALL interest in its work - then we'd get NO Zelda

  6. I just hope the new game is more challenging than WW, OOT and Minish Cap. Not that the series has ever been really challenging. But come on, enough "throw a boomerang at a wall panel" bullshit.

Erm... you missed his point. He's saying that nobody cares about the cel-shading anymore. The whole "Wind Waker is for kids" thing died a long time ago. When people complain about the game, they're talking about the repetitive sailing, half-assed puzzles, and lack of dungeons, none of which have the slightest thing to do with the graphics.

Well, maybe you two hang in different circles than I do because that's honestly all I hear working in a game store. I guess the complaints can be categorized into 2 categories: those who bitched and didnt play the game, and those who played it and bitched for the latter reasons.Like I said I'm one of the latter, and like I said I personally didnt think anything changed drastically gameplay wise, but I'm sure Nintendo percieved that the non-fans thought it had, hence here we are with an adult Link non cell shaded and ready for the "grown-ups" and other "serious" gamers.

There were dungeons, but everytime you entered a new one you'd inevitably come to the same conclusion, been there.

Done that. The t-shirts were ugly so I didnt buy one.

Nobody is hung up about the graphical style. It was one of, if not the most gorgeous games of this generation. I played it up and until you had to go around the sea for hours on end searching for tedious stuff I didn't care about enough to wade for.
