Well, evidently 3rd parties are going both ways.

So it's a matter of whether or not DS pulls a GameCube - only noteworthy games being 1st party with little 3rd part support. I know all the talk of the 3rd party lineup for DS, but that was the case for GameCube too, and support gradually dropped off. If it winds up the same for DS...?

Difference being, DS already has over 100 specific 3rd party games announced while GameCube had noncommital pledges of support. DS has more upfront 3rd party stuff announced than any previous platform, including SNES, PS2 or GBA. GameCube isn't relevant in the least if we're making comparisons.

It might be a bizarro version of the console wars - all the third parties throwing in with what they know works in portables (Nintendo) without giving PSP a fair shake.

This isn't happening either. So far it looks like all legacy GB series and youth focused games are headed to DS while PSP gets popular PS brands and more adult games in Japan. In the west both seem to be getting pretty equal support.

I think publishers are expecting DS to inherit the GB market while PSP carves out an older base for itself.

Although Konami and Namco have already pushed some new game loving on PSP, whereas DS gets rehashes of N64 games...

Er, actually both Konami and Namco have announced more DS games than PSP games so far. And there are plenty of ports on the PSP side too (Mahjong Fight Club, Ys VI, Namco Museum, Tales of Eternia, Mojipittan, etc). Actually, if we do a comparison...

Great point, maybe I should have gotten an Xbox instead of a GameCube so I could play great third party stuff like GTA San Andreas or MGS3 right now.....Or Tales of Symphonia, Resident Evil 4 early next year.....

I guess I'll just have to be content this holiday with my Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, Paper Mario, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Pikmin 2, Viewtiful Joe 2......what good are all those gems if the system doesn't have Ghost Recon 2...Why God, why?

I don't know why Nintendo didn't just hold off and make the DS more powerful in the first place. They would have had the 3rd parties and the best hardware - Sony's only selling points would have been movie playback and Final Fantasy. As it stands, it could well be a dogfight.

I am baffled as well. Your other news to be believed in that other thread I can't remember the name of, about Nintendo holding off on their new console until they can guarantee the best hardware, is happy news.

I suppose the DS is out there to stay competitive and lure people in with the spiffiness of the touch screen, and the GBA2 will be the thing that compares with the PSP in hardware?

I figure that the DS is Nintendo's way of experimenting with portably hardware without having to use the GB name. At worst, it's a filler system, and at best, it could really light a fire under developers, which is likely, and happening.
