I think the next generation is really going to clear things up as to all of this. I think the Xbox is a really decent piece of hardware, no matter what I think about the company it comes from, but I also think its main reason for popularity is because of what it has above the PS2. Better graphics, a solid and well supported online strategy, and the hard drive.
Come next gen, at least two of those will be gone. PS3 will be equal, if not better, graphics wise, unless Sony really screws up. Xenon won't have the hard drive, and if it does, it will be because PS3 has one too. The still up in the air part will be online strategy - Sony will be the dumbest company around if they don't have their own Xbox Live-esque service. If we get another PS2-style haphazard, piecemail online network, Xenon will be in a great position.
I also think that if Xenon isn't backward compatible, that's going to really hurt. If I have an Xbox but no PS2, I think I'd much rather get a PS3, where I get a next-gen system AND access to hundreds of old PS2 and PS1 games. If I have a PS2 but no Xbox, getting a Xenon would only bring me Xenon games.
I'm curious to see how strong the Xbox brand really is. I still say it is only as strong as it is now because of the advantages the system currenty has. If things are evenly matched, I want to see which system people buy strictly on name alone. MS really needs to come up with new things that will make the Xenon stand out, but from what has been reported so far, they're going to be content with trying to go head to head with Sony instead of bettering them. I think that's going to be a bad plan of action, if that's true.
