I was really turned off by Fallout's battle system.
Torment is slightly overrated in that the *game* is only decent, not great. And for those that don't enjoy dense story, I can't see it being an enjoyable experience. Otherwise though... goddamn it was some good writing and an amazing setting.Originally Posted by omfgninjas
Fallout on the other hand, isn't overrated in the slightest. Great game, great story, great replayability. One of the few rpgs I've played through multiple times over the years, it holds up well, even today. Chunky smg death animation will probably never get old either![]()

I enjoyed powerfisting people right in the eye.

Hm, aren't the Zork titles considered RPGs? Seems like they should have a place in here. You also may want to check out Anachoronox, a westernized take on the JRPG formula by Ion Storm.
For the most part I enjoy the artistic design of JRPGs more, but I agree that Western RPGs are much more fun gameplay-wise, in that they are not turn-based menu-fests. Still, though, I'd rather it take a turn towards more reactionary, skill-based combat than the die rolls it currently uses, something akin to the Mario RPGs where your skill in timing can be more of a factor than your level and equipped items.

No love for Anachronox? It was a great and humorous rpg that had Final Fantasy style battles. It was fun and had a nice story. Plus what other RPG out there can you have party members that include a mexican luchadore and a shrunken planet?

I was really hyped for Anachronox but the demo didn't do much for me so I didn't buy it. I didn't get to try the combat as the part I tried was all exploring in a town.
There's more sci-fi stuff like EA's Sentinel Worlds 1 and its sequel Hard Nova, New World Computing's Planet's Edge, Flair's Whale's Voyage series, Mindscape's Captive 1, DMA's Hired Guns(this had some cool split-screen multiplayer back in the early '90s). I should have mentioned some of these before.Originally Posted by AstroBlue
Oddly, it seems like almost every game with a more historical theme ,like Pirates! or Sword of the Samurai for example, falls closer to the strategy genre.
Am I the only person that hates the perspective from the Ultima games?
Top down viewpoint? Wasn't 70% of all RPG's (console and PC) from that era the same way? I preferred Ultima's look to something like Wizardry or Bard's Tale.
I wasn't crazy about the combat system for Ultima .. but loved the stories.
