Thread: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

  1. Only thing I found weird about the movie is how non-chalant everyone was about all the crazy shit around them. I mean the boat ride was fucking nuts. It's like everyone had done it a million times before so it was no big deal doing a buck fifty down a chocolate river tunnel with rapids.

Wellll yes, apparently he must lie and enjoy messing with the ET/Access shows cuz he is quoted several times in the EW article that he did not like it. Hence why his producer said he thought Burton was gonna "leap across the table" when he asked if he should watch the Wilder movie. Not that he had a malicious beef with the Wilder movie, just that "Some people were in awe of it, I was not" and that he and the production team wanted to make an actual adaptation of the book. I have the magazine at home but i am sure u can find it now on the EW site.

Also, I love how he added Chris Lee as his "domineering dentist father," another reason I wanna see it. As Burton says in the EW article "Because there has to be a reason why he became this way, otherwise he is just another weird guy."

Also, I like that Grandpa Joe is played by David Kelly from Waking Ned Devine, one of my favorite independent comedies.

82% so far from Rotten Tomatoes, not too shabby:

  3. Absolutley 100% loved this movie. I laughed from just about beginning to end. I still enjoy the original a tad more - but this was still awesome. The doll dance/fire scene was my favorite, too good. Wonka's dialouge was hilarious.

I remember hearing this was being made, and who was making it when it was first announced and thinking of the possiblities. Flash forward to the trailers, which I thought were garbage. Then I saw the movie and my original hopes were fullfilled. The trailers really dont do it justice. Burton redeemed!

What really bothered me about this is all the kids were obviously set up... except Charlie. He was the only one that wasn't offered temptation and refused, and the 'choose the family over factory' bit doesn't count because it was clear it wasn't what Wonka expected.

That and there was so little interaction with the other kids that I didn't really feel like they got what they deserved. The original Veruca was a complete monster in a wonderful way and got what she deserved. Here she's more or less forgetable. Also, I really don't think this Mike TV would have fallen for the trap set for him. I think he was more likely to cave Wonka's skull in with his own cane and steal the tech wonders of the factory.

It was great overall, but I still like the original better, no matter how low tech it'll seem from now on.

Eh...the kids were 'set up' in the loosest sense of the term, I guess, yeah. But not really Veruca- I mean, who the fuck would want a squirrel?

Agreed. They all seemed like they were just imitating the original kids (especially Veruca). And they really breezed over getting to know the kid's personalities in favor of showing all that pretty pretty factory CG.

Aside from one or two effects, I don't really think the original looks dated at all.

  8. This movie, along with Wedding Crashers, totally blew away this week's opening movies at the box office. Good news, because both are great.

  9. I still haven't seen it, d'oh. But if it is a good flick I am glad to see it's #1 and kicked down Fantastic Four and Bad News Bears. ha Go get 'em, Burton.

  10. Rented this the other night. I agree 100 percent with Dolemite's assessment of the film. A complete waste of my time. Possibly one of the most excruciating cinematic experiences of my life.

The songs minus the first one sucked, Wonka sucked, the Oompa Loompas sucked, the CGI sucked, the whole fucking movie sucked. Christopher Lee and that first Wonka song was the only saving grace of this shitfest.
