Thread: War of The Worlds - Steven Spielberg

  1. I forgot that I saw this pile a few days ago. Honestly... 4/10. The effects were great and the acting was generally okay, but that ending... give me a break. And the fact that the brother/son didn't die when he basically ate a fist full of fireball for a half hour was really stupid.

  2. I'm not nearly as critical as many of you, so I enjoyed WotW. I can see somebody not being satisfied with it though because the movie loses its steam towards the end and the ending is so ... abrupt. But it's just like the ending should be so I can't complain. I was surprised the son survived. I can't imagine how he could have done it (well, I can invent something of course ... but I won't).

I'd give War of the Worlds an 8/10 or so. I'd give the first half a 10/10! I left the theater not feeling quite right with the film, but many scenes kind of haunted me afterwards ... when it thundered the other night, I actually felt a chill, remembering the start of the film. Anything that can make that kind of impact on me deserves some kind of merit -- it hasn't happened since I took the trash out into the dark after watching Blair Witch in the theater (I am NOT saying its a good film, but it did scare the bejeebus out of me in the theater).

And by way of comparisons, I'd give Batman at least a 9/10 review. Gotta see that one again.

And that's from the species we're part of. There's no visual, "Mark, you seem to be getting attacked by nature. Have some medicine." If disease or infection ever shows up on a skin level that's generally well after it's already torn through someone's body for a good amount of time.
Well if there's no way to show it, it's something that doesn't translate to film well and therefore brings down the movie as a whole.

Seriously, how do you pitch that idea to a director?

"Okay guys, we can't show the audience why the downfall of the aliens occurs, but we'll be sure to reveal it to them in a voiceover in the last 10 seconds of the film."

Yeah, I guess they should make all movies for the lowest common denominator to make sure everybody "gets it". Also they show microscopic viruses in the start of the film. This is called foreshadowing.

  6. So you actually think it's a good idea to leave it to a 10 second voiceover to explain the outcome of the entire movie?

  8. Did anyone seriously not know the ending? I thought for some reason it was well known how it ended. The whole movie I was just waiting for them to start dropping off. The basement scene lasted longer than my piss break, which was dissapointing. Overall, good movie.

First thing I thought of was the ass eel video. Even the tenticles looked eel like.

  10. Yes in both the original Wells book and the 53’ Haskin movie the aliens died from infection. In the book it goes to lengths to explain that on their world (Mars in the novel) there are no microbes, bacteria, or viruses, so they never expected them here.

What ever you guys think you all have to agree that the begining will for ever be a classic moment in sci fi....

I think I saw the movie a 2nd time just for the first half of the movie....
