Thread: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

  1. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

First of all, a forum that has a thread on Dr. Who, but no thread on HGttG?

Second of all, if you have not read the books, and are between the ages of 13 - 99. Go immediately and buy all of them.

Finally, here is a look at the upcoming movie based on the books. You may have seen the underwhelming trailer, here are some more tidbits.

AICN's recent article with moving pictures, and cryptic reviews.

A nice layout of pre-production art and casting taken from author Douglas Adam's website.

  2. The first book was awesome, but the series got worse and worse with every sequel until I just lost interest. The last one I read was So Long and Thanks for all the Fish, which was okay. I think there was another after that, Mostly Harmless or something, but I never bothered. All this was ages ago.

I have no expectations for the movie. For some reason, I just don't care. I guess it's because it's one of the books that I had very, very vivid pictures in my mind of how everyone and everything would look, and with clowns like Mos Def starring in it and the fact that it's being directed by a guy that's only done music videos for Blur before, I know the movie won't come anywhere near that.

Still, I'll see it when it comes out.

  3. I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I have 0 expectations, in fact, I don't think the book will translate to a decent movie. But, I will see it, to see how they do.

  4. They'll just try to make it cool and hip and all MTV-style, which is what this movie shouldn't be. It's supposed to be just plain silly, like Monty Python.

  5. I absolutely love the series, my father got me hooked on it four/five years ago or so, I can't remember. I've had this big old hardback edition of all of them together for quite some time.

I'm seldom a fan of book-to-movie adaptations, and I don't possibly see how this could be any good. I like the book too much and I'm too bitchy to ever enjoy an adaptation that deviates from the original text. Most likely, I'll end up watching it well after release and not really enjoying it. Meh. Pity Adams died...

  6. I thought this thread was going to be about the British mini-series.

I don't actually think Hitchiker started out as a book guys, I think it was a radio show first.. then developed for novel and TV. Not sure, but calling this a book-to-movie adaptation might not be accurate.

  7. It's true that Adams had actors read the series over several episodes on a BBC radio show. However, the movie will be based off of the book, which is more complete.

I knew this would happen, but it can't possibly be worse than this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081874/...=11;ft=20;fm=1

  8. The BBC TV mini-series of it was fantastic. So I think the movie could be okay. I need to read the books, I never have, which... is a shame.

  9. What the hell why isnt this on the poster

  10. I dunno, I'm probably going to watch it. i figure if it sucks, at least I can complain about it for the rest of the year.
