Thread: The GameFan history thread

  1. Hey, bahn.

I haven't posted at SRK regularly in years. (HerV, on the other hand... ) I came here from a link at a friend's blog and I read the first 450 posts in one sitting last night.

Gamefan wasn't a mag I read much (it was hard to find, also I was cheap), but reading the scans people have been posting, I can see why people would like it, and I would definitely like it as the gamer I am today, compared to when GF was out and strong and I played only Nintendo's systems.

Oh shit... if you are who I think you are. Colby?

And yeah, we really need to put together a listing of who is who in here.

    Oh, and my name submissions:
120% Super Fantastic Gaming Funtime Hour

Actually, though, I kinda dig restart... and it would be a fitting name.

and djpubba: damn... just damn.... but it all sounds like Dave.

And the disconnect from reality ("you're not allowed to call Andy") totally sounds like something he'd say when confronted like that.

shisoshi: I dig the Restart title.

Yeah...haven't been there too often, even after the import release of SF Anniversary. Damn, read all 450 posts? That took dedication!!

GF was an unprecendented mag, and it's great to see that integrity and passion has prompted the potential project to revitalize those qualities once again.

I'm still a little sore from all that sitting. :o

But, it was worth, to read every story, every comeback, every thing in the thread. Makes me kick myself for not giving GF a better chance.

  7. Havn't read the whole entire thread yet, but I gotta pay my respects to Gamefan. Not only was it hard to find, but it seemed near impossible to get a subscription to the damn magazine considering mine never had any inserts! The magazine was pure gold, from the writing to the actual editors (ECM and Dangohead sticking out the most in my mind).

Regardless, Gamefan is easily the best gaming magazine to be produced in my humble opinion. Now it's time to read this thread...

"Screw Attack" would be a great title for a feature, maybe a code-section or something. I also think there should be a feature highlighting below-average gamers called, "Weak-Sauce" or "Button-Masher".

Here's a few magazine title ideas I've been kicking around:

Player-1: To keep with the sexual-theme going. The "1" could be real huge in the logo or something. We might have an issue with the first four letters being similar to another publication, but there it is.

Player-2: To be used later as a spin-off magazine, ala EGM2.

XGF: Make what you want of the initials, but it would be fitting since most of you were former GF staffers (get it? Ex-GameFan?). Kinda weak, yes.

Continue?: "Press Start" and "Insert Credit" have been taken. This is one of the few on-screen instructions left, other than "Select Character" or "GAME OVER" (which wouldn't be bad, either). Plus, at the end of every article, there'd be the magazine logo asking you to continue. How cool is that?

VIDEO GAME MAGAZINE: Says it all right there. Straight and to the point. You can even add a "the" to it for added emphasis.

Total Bastard Gamer: Might be a little rough - Not sure if the Wal-Marts would ever carry a title such as this. This was also the original name of the fanzine I worked on.

Super GameGO!: Hoah offered up the GO! name earlier, but this just adds more flava.

Solid Gamer: Unlike "Liquid Gamer", who got all the recessive genes!

Flying Monkey Stick: Not necessarily for the magazine, just thought it sounded like a good band name or something.

Gah..it's hard coming up with a serious name for something that will hopefully be the spiritual successor to Gamefan. Hardcore Gamer sounds great, but it's missing...something.

    EDIT: "Restart" would be perfect.

  9. I'm not sure I've ever showed this to anybody... but this is from the "lost" issue of AnimeFan, the one that was being produced for the issue of GameFan that was canned when the mag closed down. The issue was set to introduce a new look for the section, that of course then never came to be. The section itself wasn't finished, which is why some of the text doesn't make sense with what it is paired up with. As well, there six pages in total, but the rest of the pages weren't as finished as the first two were.

    Anyhow... here you go.
