Thread: Backpackin/Camping Goodness!

  1. Backpackin/Camping Goodness!

I'm in the process of planning the second of two backpacking trips for this upcoming summer, and their is nothing like the thrill and excitement of planning a fun outing other then going on the outing itself. The build up of anticipation and wait for the trip make it all the more better.

The first backpackign trip will be along the Appalachian Trail starting just south of the Smoky Mountains National Park and end in Hot Springs, NC just north of the park. This will be over a 200 mile hike lasting about 2 weeks. I've been planning this one for a while and cannot wait for it.

The next trip, I started planning just last night. This one will be along the Appalachian Trail through the Shenandoah National Park for about 100 miles. Once again, the excitement of preparing and planning for the trip have taken hold, and the only thing on my mind is hiking.

So who else loves to backpack or camp and also gets caugt up in the excitement? There is truly nothing quite like experiencing the beautiful outdoors.

  2. Man, I love camping, but I haven't done it in years. I have everything you could need- tent, sleeping bags, propane lanterns and stove, you name it. I just haven't gotten around to it. This summer I really have to grab the gf and go upstate.

I've never really gone backpacking, though...usually it's just renting a site in the wilderness and parking the car right there. I wouldn't mind really roughing it for once. I don't know about hiking 200 miles, but...

  3. I read the thread as "backpain/camping goodness". Because, ironically, that's what happened to me the only time I've ever been camping. Slept on a goddamn tree root, couldn't move the next morning, and worst of all some goddamn bears came into the campground that night so all I could do was lay there in fear and immense pain.

  4. I went camping once and it was so so. I was terrified of the bathroom on the campsite so I held in EVERYTHING for 3 days.

    MVS still holds the record.

  6. If there's a bathroom you aren't camping.

  7. Sleeping outside = camping to me. It was some campsite in NJ.

    What is MVS' record?

  8. Camping? Haven't done it since I was in Boy Scouts, but it's a helluva lot of fun! I'd love to go again. Anybody on TNL have camping stuff and wanna head to Devil's Lake or something?

Yeah, I'm curious about MVS's record too. I can't type all about it now, but back before I started High School I went to Philmont Scout Ranch and hiked through the mountains with some of our scout troop. About 180 miles in two weeks. It was pretty rough stuff. We trained for months ahead of time to be in shape for it, and it was still murderous.
I have war stories about that trip... but more later.

Anyhow, what you going to do about food?

Post-college, pumpkin-defenestrating, tricycle racing angst. Whoosh.

    Something like 8 days.

  10. Should we start a high score thread for that?
