He's not completely wrong though.
I love JRPGs, but I can't deny that the best RPGs I've played over the last few years have all come from Western Developers. FFX was the last truely great RPG to come out of Japan. Unless we also talk SRPGs, then Japan still get's credit because of Disgaea.
Yes it is. KotOR, Diablo, they're hack-fests. Click on the enemy & watch 'em go. Morrowind only really had regular attacks or spells, unless you played a stealth character and snuck up behind the whole game. Most western rpgs these days are online, which means even more hacking.Originally Posted by g0zen
I have no problem with what they tried to do conceptually. If they'd kept the repetitive catchphrases out of the fighting, made regular attacks serve some purpose, and only had long animations for tech moves that cost alot of points, it would have been fine.Originally Posted by OmniGear

Whether you've grown out of JRPGs or just got bad at them does not suddenly make them obsolete or outdated.Originally Posted by Yoshi
You're right. It's the fact that their western counterparts have advanced, and they haven't, that has made them obsolete. If you honestly think that Final Fantasy X compares favorably in any way to something like KoTOR or Neverwinter Nights, you should seriously go play them both again.Originally Posted by Rocca

I played KotOR before I played FFX. Outside the white-knuckle thrills of branching (bland) dialogue trees and watching your guy's face change, FFX is a better designed game in every facet.Originally Posted by Yoshi

What evolved from Final Fantasy VII to X in your opinion then? At least the SD characters are gone, but that happened in VIII too, and that was a steaming pile.Originally Posted by StriderKyo

I enjoyed the FFX games almost as much as the best Western RPGs this gen. FFX's strength was in a more strategic battle system and FFX-2's was in its more open-ended design. They weren't rehashes of the PS1 games.
In general though I think WRPGs have been closer to what I want in an RPG. Japan hasn't been attempting anything as ambitious as the Elder Scrolls games.
