Thread: Festen

  1. Festen

While I can appreciate why others might have enjoyed this film, I couldn't help leaving it feeling deeply disturbed. Christian's mission only finds fulfilment for a few and that last scene with his father is troubling. Not for those with problems with families who are a "little too close". Beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted but on a subject that just churns my stomach. I definitely cannot recommend this!
What a fantastic movie. I've never seen more on-screen awkwardness. I saw the movie was mentioned in a most depressing movies thread, but I'm interested more in the chair squirming creepiness of this variety, if anyone has seen this and loves these types of movies (recommend some). Trying to make the most out of this Netflix subscription.

  2. I've only seen a few scenes of Festen, but I'm guessing Lars von Trier and the other Dogme movies might come close to this (I haven't seen any of them).

Try The Piano Teacher, which is a really bizarre deranged drama. Interesting, but definitely nothing I'll want to stomach again soon.
