I wonder if in fact Venom is dead, considering the lack of a body and the possibility that Brock could have reunited with the symbiote in time to spare it from annihilation. I also don't think he was a scrub in any way, he was kicking Peter's rear despite the fact that Peter was far more experienced in his abilities than the neophyte Brock - experience which ultimately allowed Peter to defeat the monster, with help from Harry.
I'm inclined to believe that the symbiote was the dominant force in the Venom creature, considering how fierce and monstrous the Venom creature immediately was, and that it didn't trigger Peter's spider-sense. Maybe it could be the Brock's will isn't as strong as Peter's, or that the symbiote hadn't been accustomed to a human being initially, but I think Brock embracing a rare reciprocal figure in his life - especially one that allowed him some of the augmented powers of Spider-man among other abilities - may have also had something to do with it.
The steady progression of Peter's experience as Spider-man against major villains has been handled extremely well, now that I think about it:
(1) He relied on (blind) instinct to get past the high-tech gadgetry of the Green Goblin to the point where the Goblin killed himself by his own inexperience as a business-man-turned-enhanced-metahuman.
(2) He couldn't defeat Dr. Octopus physically but relied on his mind to draw Otto Octavius away from the thrall of the harness/tentacles, and an awakened Octavius decided to end the catastrophe he was about to create as well as the monster he had become.
(3) In fighting back at what looked to be the second coming of the Goblin, the man who almost killed Spider-man at the beginning, he unknowingly put the somewhat-inexperienced Harry's life at risk (Harry must have trained some, at least with the glider, given how well was throughout the movie). Peter did a sound job of holding his own despite the surprise attack though.
(4) Despite being battered by the duo of Sandman and Venom, Peter used both his mind and body to defeat the symbiote/Venom, although the chance to do so only came after a lethal attack that Peter was spared from thanks to Harry sacrificing himself for the closest thing to family he's probably ever had.
(*) One could also argue that a more experienced Peter was able to defeat the Sandman. Granted he was benefiting from the symbiote augmenting some of his abilities, it was Peter's keen mind that made him release the flood of water which dissolved Marko.
