The only way I can see Topher working as Eddie is if they use the Ultimate version of him.



But then they'd have to go with the ultimate origin, I don't want some hybrid between classic & new Venom.

I think a hybrid version is the only way you're gonna see Venom. We're not going to get a Secret Wars movie (thank God), and I doubt that Marvel is going to introduce alien-anything outside of a Fantastic Four sequel.

Lets face it. The Venom origin is extremely stupid.

The Ultimate story arc focuses much more on Peter's family. Something the movie hasn't done yet. Hopefully they use the Ultimate arc instead of that stupid alien plot.

Kirsten Dunst herself has confirmed that both Venom (!!! ) and Sandman will be in the movie! The only thing she doesn't seem to know is who will play who. IMHO Church would make more sense for Eddie Brock but Topher would look and sound great as the "evil" side of Peter which eventually leads to Venom IIRC if they go that route (pardon my ignorance) From the often maligned yet sometimes useful aintitcool.com:

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here, newly returned from Los Angeles... I have tons of cool shit to tell you folks, but first up are some current events. It seems that Kirsten Dunst let some info slip while promoting ELIZABETHTOWN. This story started over at zap2it.com and has spread like wildfire... While I will believe Dunst a lot more than "my brother's friend's sister's cousin toured Sony and says the villains are..." I'm still not 100% sure she's giving the correct info... if only for little things like she hasn't read the script. Of course she's in the know, but it'll take an official announcement from Sony, Avi Arad or Sam Raimi before I will be 100% sure on the villains... So, we may have us Venom and Sandman. A weird combo... Anyway, here are the words of Mary Jane from those good folks at Zap2it.com:
"We have really great people though as the villains in this film, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace -- Venom and Sandman," says Kirsten Dunst while promoting her film "Elizabethtown."

"Maybe I wasn't supposed to say that," she says, checking with her rep, who assures her the information has already been released.

The "Interview with a Vampire" actress is a little shaky on the information at first, saying that Church would play Venom and Grace would take on Sandman, before reversing her claim when a journalist expresses disbelief. "It's the other way around. You're right," she concedes.

Dunst can be forgiven since she has yet to receive a script for the film that will begin shooting in January.

"But I know the general story," she adds. "There's a lot that they're trying to fit into this one."

2007 is now officially too far away.

A great theory I saw someone post on how Eddie could become Venom in the movie without all the alien/host mumbo jumbo:

I think I saw this in an earlier TB, but...what happened to the spider in SM1 after it bit Peter? The way I would see it is this: Peter and Eddie are mirror images of each other in the begining, nerdy, well-meaning schlubs. But where Peter was surrounded in love (at least by his aunt and uncle), Eddie was constantly belittled and teased by everyone including his family, possibly even abused. Perhaps miraculously, the genetic-enhanced spider finds its way to Eddie and bites him. Eddie goes through the same transformation as Peter, BUT, while Peter learned that with great power comes great responsibility, Eddie learns that with great power comes opportunity and revenge. In his first act as Venom, the dark Spider-Man, Eddie either murders or causes the death of his parents/caretakers.
