Thread: I really love Robocop, Predator, Terminator and Alien

I really love Robocop, Predator, Terminator and Alien

What is it about these 4 movies that made them instant classics? How come we don't see great action franchises like these come out anymore? It can't be money because tripe like Van Helsing probably cost enough to make the entire Robocop trilogy. Are we really that tapped out of creative people? Should I have rented Species 3?

    I'm so confused.

  2. I watched aliens today. that is a perfect action/suspense/sci-fi movie.

They really don't make them like they used to. I think CG has alot to do with the demise of great action flicks (even though the incredibles is one of the finest action movies I've ever seen), that and the need to put kung fu in them. Even trash like the movie "they live" is far more entertaining than 99% of the action movies released today.

  3. Dont, Species 3 sucks. Other from few nice gore scenes it sucked even more than Species 2 ever did. Good thing I downloaded it for free

  4. I think it's because they all have main characters that are simply put cool as fuck.

  5. - I loved the Dark Horse crossover comics.

Needless to say I was excited to see AVP... Unfortunately.

...Honestly, it comes down to character design.

We haven't had a solid hero/villian with the same amout of style since those guys.

    That sucks.

...You always hear of HR Giger but who the hell invented the Predator?

  6. The Predator was from Stan Winston and James Cameron. The mandibles were Jim's idea.

I agree that needless CG is sucking the creativity and fun out of filmmaking, which could in turn be what makes new movies not as memorable as the classics.

I think the missing ingredient is love.

Seriously, though, watch a DVD of an old movie, and see all the crazy shit they do to pull off special effects. It's fucking awesome, and is an art in and of itself.

  8. I think the special effects James did for aliens kicks the living crap out of what CG was trying to attempt in the later movies, there's just a certain realism to it that cannot be replicated.

It really ticks me off that he had so much influence in these films that he personally didn't do AVP himself. The guy knows full well that he could make the best goddamn flick ever and yet he won't even bother because he said he's pretty much done with it.

  9. I agree with shit load of CGI the directors are using now. I believe that because of CGI the director will become lazy and story dizmal. This why I perfer to watch The Thing, Aliens, Predator and Termintaor. The special effects looks more realistic and blends into the story as if it were an actor itself. But there are some directors who have pulled of some great movies with CGI, Peter Jackson for one.

It is the CG, plain and simple. Look at the new action movies, and look at the new star wars movies.

Take Short circuit for example. Say what you will about that movie but you will have to admit the robot special effects made that movie what it was. Imagine how bad it would have been, had Johnny five been replaced with a CG robotic jar jar binx.

If you want a movie to be good, keep as much of it physically real as you can and still get the movie done. Period.
