Jem was one of my favorite cartoons when I was little and the release of the series on dvd got me interested in the show again. Suprisingly the show is still just as entertaining as it was when I was a kid. When the show went in to production (to sell dolls that were ugly in my opinion) the creators wanted it to appeal to girls as well as boys. So the show ends up being a slap happy drama mixed in with lots of cliffhanger action bits. The creator of the characters and main plot, Christy Marx, previously worked on Transformers and GI Joe and you can definately see this throughout the series. The highlight of every episode are the three nicely animated short music videos which sometimes add to the plot and help to advance the story.

Jem is about a girl named Jerrica Benton, who by the help of the holographic computer Synergy left to her by her dead father can project a hologram over her body to become the glamorous rockstar Jem. Only a few people know that Jerrica and Jem is the same person, Kimber, Aja, Shana, and Raya. Together they form the band Jem and the Holograms, to battle another girlband, the Misfits. Jem was probably one of the only american cartoons to have evolving characters whos lives change thoughout the episodes.

I'm still amazed that this show came out in 85 because the animation is really nice for a tv show. Theres not much it can be compared to, cept maybe a girlish anime with lots of violence and explosions. Today it blows my mind that the main character lives a double life and cheats on her boyfriend with herself in a kids show. One episode even centers around her jealousy of herself! Wtf!? Its crazy and I love it.

man, my sister made me watch that stuff. I recall liking the misifits more than jem.

She also made me watch my little poney. Anyone remember the 4 parter with a singing horse that talked like michel Jackson and was called Nightshade? They used to show the glow worms and potatoe head kids after my little pony, so it wasn't all bad.

I used to watch this with a girl in my class back in elementary school. One day after watching an episode with a doctor in it we "played doctor" (my first time) so the series will always be cool by me.
