Anyways, back on topic- Emo began as a subgenre of punk/hardcore. It can be argued that the first emo band was Nation of Ulysses back in the 80's. Like most things when they break into the mainstream, what is commonly known as emo today actually bears very little resemblence to the emo of the 80's and 90's. What often surprises me is how few of these emo-scenesters today know anything of the history of that scene. As it is, most people who were involved in the emo scene then (which seemed much heavier and darker to me), don't really associate with what has come to be known as emo among mainstream scenesters and high school kids.
So basically emo= whining about girls.
