Ending felt like they weren't sure if they were getting another season. They just wrapped all that shit up with a bow straight off.

I read over at SRK this was supposed to just be a one-time thing, which is why they skipped over Korra learning all of her elemental abilities besides air and wrapped up Amon all within one season. Those 12 episodes contain many months and they just go into what's important. In the middle of the season Nick signed them up for another season or two, but by that time they were already up against a wall.

Season 2 is gonna be everybody having awesome lunches and hanging out at the beach.
Everyone thinks because Amon is taken care of that's that. What about the people who don't want benders to rule them anymore? They still exist. They can continue a civil war themselves. It may very well be where the future of the show goes.
It's a good angle and I hope they keep it up, the non-benders actually have kind of a legit beef.

I suspect based on their actions before, they came up with a story to fill in the remaining 3 seasons. It sounds like Season 2 will be called Spirits so focusing on the spirit world aspect!
