Thread: Now Playing

  1. Watched Stripes. It was ok, drags in some parts and wasn't exactly that hilarious. It does have it's moments though.

  2. I've seen Monsters Inc. about 10 times now, and I have to say that the replay value on this movie is really high. It's my nephew's favorite movie and he demands to watch it atleast twice a day. Whenever I babysit him I thank God Pixar exists to make their movies.

Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. will keep him occupied for hours. Otherwise I have to play sports with him the entire day. He never stops.

I'm going to be watching Hitch today.

Gattaca is an excellent movie, definitely worth seeing.

    Other movies to look into:

    12 Monkeys
    28 Days Later
    Blade Runner [!!!]
    Cherry 2000 [lol]
    Escape from New York

and I've heard some good things about Reign of Fire, but I haven't watched it myself. Six-String Samurai may also be something you're interested in, personally though I couldn't make it through the entire film.

    Logan's Run is okay.

and I've heard some good things about Reign of Fire,
This movie was a lot of fun and crazy under rated. Worth checking out.

Heh, I have seen all of these movies except for Six String Samurai. I will check that and Gattaca out.

  6. Six String Samurai is either great fun or boring as hell. I'm not sure which yet.

I just picked up Kentucky Fried Movie today. Catholic High School Girls In Trouble!

Jin Roh is sitting on the DVD shelf, going to give it a second watch this week. Unexpectedly good.

Just watched Election this weekend, too. Really liked the dry humor.

  7. Purple Butterfly
    2003
    Subtitled
    Starring Zhang Ziyi

I just got done watching Purple Butterfly. Wow. Wow! I don't know where to begin. About 65% of this movie is absolutely brilliant. It was like Scorsese mixed with Fritz Lang. Seriously, the movie is unfolding and I really know little about what it's about or what to expect, and as it moves on I'm like, "Fuck. What the...? Damn that's something. That's really something." It's a kind of impressionistic noir-ish piece with something of the intrigue of a crime thriller from the 30's or 40's, taking place at the start of the Sino-Japanese war, beginning in Manchuria but mostly taking place in Shanghai.

I'm a bit unwilling to go into specifics about the plot or whatnot, because for me it was nice to discover or uncover it as it went along. Now, I said much of this was brilliant, but that leaves a whole other chunk, half of which I thought was good but pretty conventional and the other half I thought was either overwrought or too muddled.

Concerning the muddled parts, I think perhaps when a movie is subtitled and the director starts playing with the timeline so that chronolgy goes out the window, something may get lost in translation. But in the minutes after viewing the film, these portions have become less bothersome, having had some time to sink in and allow me to process them. In fact, it took me a bit to realize something at the end, but it seemed pretty revelatory once I did. Not as punch-in-the-gut "holy shit" surprising as it maybe could or should have been, but this film flows pretty seemlessly between extreme subtlety and outright explicitness, so the understated nature of this revelation wasn't out of context I don't think. Also, there's a montage scene where time is actually moving in reverse, and I thought this particular instance was really elegantly done.

The overwrought portion really only rears its ugly head in the closing moments of the film, which to me could have been excised from the movie and never been missed. Is it relevant to the overall portrait of what these people were driven by? Absolutely. Does it fit with the rest of the film? Not at all. In fact, what is shown takes place in the years after the timeline of the film, and while it gives their actions some historical merit, I think the merit was apparent from the very context of China's invasion by Japan without it having to be hammered into my head.

As for the stretches that seemed quite conventional, I suppose these were only a dissappointment because of the sheer greatness found elsewhere throughout the film. It seemed to me that the more concrete the story arc became, the less profound the filmmaking seemed to be. It almost seemed like the storytelling got so tight it couldn't help but to unravel, if not in its narrative, at least in the language or voice of the movie. And while I said the ending's subtlety was not out of step, I can't help but feel like it was underwhelming. This presented a pretty big problem for me actually, because it kind of pissed me off that the entirety of the movie and the very payoff of the movie couldn't live up to the potential displayed in the parts I thought were pretty genious.

So overall I'd say recommended but with some reservations, one or two fairly serious. I'm curious to hear others' impressions of this movie if it sounded interesting enough for you to watch.

  8. I saw Deliverance for the first time, it's an interesting film. Burt Reynolds was the man, shooting rednecks through the heart! The infamous "squeal like a piggy" scene was very uncomfortable to watch, I actually covered my eyes, which I NEVER do. I read that all the actors did all their own stunts and canoeing, which if true, kicks ass.

I almost didn't want to watch Deliverance when I heard about that scene, but at the end it didn't turn out to be as bad as I thought. Still gross, though. Overall I thought the movie was a little boring and was just too dull for my tastes.

Thats because youve been raised on zillions of brainless, high-explosion junk. Deliverance, like most other genres of movies attempted in the 1970s, is some of the best work out there.
