Does your college offer workout classes? My favorite is spin class (the one with the bikes) it burns TONS of calories and is lots of fun. On the plus for you, spin class usually has lots of girls in it who are usually in good shape. Pilates is another good one; it's another chick magnet. To acheive weight loss you are going to have to workout at least 5 days a week. Stop eating out, those are the worst meals ever for weight loss. Buy yourself a cookbook and start cooking your own meals, then you can control the calorie and fat content.
    1) D= I don't drink soda now
    2) The school doesn't offer those things. We have a gym though
    3) no kitchen. If we had a kitchen, id cook for myself and not be in this mess.

But I have a girlfriend and Im getting sex regularly, and I dont have time to actually go to the gym without sacrificing schoolwork or Rome: Total War time, so I dont really give a fuck. But yea, if I was single Id be freaking out. But I guess if I was single I wouldnt be drinking beer and partying as much. Anyway, for the fun I had Ill gladly take the extra 10 pounds that I can work off, memories are forever, right?

Thats college for you. But Im looking forward to going back to the gym and running. Around my house has nice, gradual hills that should be a good workout to run around.

if you can tell people how to do this when they live in a dorm that serves food and has absolutely NO access to a kitchen, then you deserve a Nobel Prize. This is bad advice.

Same with sethsez (although not AS bad). Its nearly impossible to eat 5 small meals in college because the meal times are set, and most of the time they dont let you bring food out of the dorm.

Honestly, I dont see how anyone can not gain weight in college. Its really really hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle and still succeed in your classes, especially if your major is not trivial. Im not saying that as a cop-out, its just reality. You see shows from schools like University of Central Florida and shit and everyone is gorgeous; because that school takes everyone and the classes are easy so they can just hit the gym. Not so for a tough school and a tough major.

So my advice, IP, is to run 3 times a week, gradually increasing your distance, and put down the french fries and pick up the salads in the cafeteria. DDR is also really good if you have access to it. Try the best you can to keep a consistent running schedule, but if you cant make it one day, because, like, you got a midterm the next day and really cant study, then just dont worry about it. If you do then you get all this pressure to "catch up" in your head and it wears on you.
So what you are really trying to say is...

It's the best sport for weight loss (not that this swim coach is biased or anything) and toning:

    1) Low impact. When you're overweight and you start running, your knees (and whole body) will take a pounding. Water supports your weight and lets you work against the water...not the concrete. As long as you're doing your stroke correctly, you cannot get hurt (your body is working against itself...it's not pushing against anything). The only people who do get hurt swimming have shoulder problems b/c they're using their hands/arms incorrectly.

    2) Total body workout. Plenty of over-pumped liars say their machine will do what no other machine does and give you a total body workout. Bull. Swimming works both sides of your body equally, so you don't rely on your dominant side. Also, it focuses on the most important muscle groups (if you're looking to look good naked) - back, torso, abs, shoulders, triceps. Your chest and biceps will never be huge but you will be lean and cut.

    3) It's clean. Although you sweat in the pool (make sure to drink during a workout), you don't get all sweaty and gross. May not seem like a big deal to those of us who like to know we're working hard but I love getting out of the pool, grabbing a shower and knowing that I'm one clean SOB.

    4) It's the best all-around sport for fitness. Not only can you do it your entire life but you improve your flexibility and agility. Pumping iron is great if you want to look like Arnie or be super-strong. I'd take a swimmer 6 days a week and twice on Sundays over some guy who can bench 350, if we're going to measure overall athletic ability. Swimming won't turn you into someone who benches 300 but you will have insane endurance and equally incredible flexibility/agility. I think these qualities are more impressive than brute strength and I also think they are, for lack of a better term, sexier qualities.

IP, if you are going to start swimming, I'd be happy to give you some pointers/workouts.

Protip: Don't treat swimming like running. Do sets, don't try to just swim for a mile.
Posts like this make me wish I didn't live in Canada.

edit: And only posts like this and nothing else EVER (covering up the blatant joke)

  5. So what you are really trying to say is...
No, what Im trying to say is that its very easy to rattle off a list of health tips, but when youre in college a lot of that is useless because good health is so dependent on four things of equal importance: eating healthy, getting regular exercise, drinking in moderation, and getting enough sleep. All four of these things become pretty much lofty, unattainable goals once you start college full-time. Especially if you have any social life whatsoever.

I speak from experience. I tried to do a 5 day a week workout routine in college, but as soon as midterms started popping up, forget it! Its just not possible. I suppose if youre studying sociology or communications or some BS like that then its possible, but not a hard, physical/life-sciences type major unless you need to study only an hour a day (and I went to a top school and never met anyone like this) or you really dont care about sleep.

So my advice is to simply eat in moderation and run a little. Another good thing would be to take a fitness class (the gyms at most school universities offer them, for like $30 you can take tennis or whatever) and just do something you enjoy doing. Then take it a step farther, join a club where you can do that regularly. Youd see the pounds drop before you know it, and it would actually work with your rigorous college schedule.

But dont sacrifice enjoyment of your college years for it. Like I said Id gladly take all the fun and debauchery I had even if it means coming out 10 pounds heavier. My girlfriend wanted to do irish car bombs a few nights ago, even though it pretty much destroyed my caloric intake for the day. But so what? I have the rest of my life to be a fidgety prune.

I lived in the dorms for 3 years and had no problems cooking. I also did not have a kitchen. I had a crockpot, a George Forman Grill, one of those portable burners and a microwave. I made kick-ass healthy meals all the time, it's not that hard it just takes some extra effort. It is not bad advice Mr. Poopypants!

eh, I'm not cooking after I spent 1000 bucks on a meal ticket, that I can't get out of getting.

Tell that to the thousands of student-athletes taking full loads in legit majors across America (see: swim teams; don't see: football)
