Thread: God of War Official Thread

  1. I also agree RE4 is better than GoW. I also think Splinter Cell 3 is better. But GoW is a close 3rd.

I'd just like to point out here that this comparision is retarded because God of War ripped its entire combat system and many specific moves directly out of DMC. Without DMC taking its time to get where it is GoW wouldn't have a combat system at all. Even God Mode is exactly the same as DMC3's DMD right down to not offering anything new and not putting any effort into making the enemies harder, but simply taking the easy way out and pumping up enemy lifebars so much that beating on normal enemies is only dangerous because it threatens to put you to sleep for taking so long.

Then there's how all the puzzles use the exact same mechanics and level setups as PoP with a little Soul Reaver here and there. The reason GoW is as good as it is is because all they did was straight up rip off other games shot for shot and add a really cool ability to finish off opponents (which could be said is like an on-screen indicator with Mortal Kombat but that's arguable).

That said, I really enjoyed GoW and it had a great story. There were a lot of amazing moments and they did a number of things beautifully, but they also saved the worst for last and it felt like they just gave up from Hades on out which left a bad taste in my mouth. If you're going to put crap in a game, put it in the middle. If it's at the beginning most people won't get hooked and if it's at the end then it just mars the whole experience.
Let me put it this way, the story in God of War made up for any other shortfalls it may have as an action game
That's a different argument and one I can agree with. The story didn't do the same to me but when it does you can love a game no matter how flawed the rest of it is. (Which is pretty much how most RPGs work, anyway.)

  3. I just got an issue of PSM the other day with a playable demo of this included, and WOW, I'm stunned at how well everything is done. The music is forceful, and the controls are responsive, although alternating between triangle and square is a bit cumbersome.

Hey, it's rough pressing buttons that are next to each other and the same distance from the grips so that you don't really have to move your finger very much.

I love this game. It's so damn epic. I only have one real complaint so far and it isn't a gameplay issue: why is ancient Greece littered with treasure chests that no one has opened before? I know it's a fantasy game but I think games should strive for a little realism. We're used to stuff like that and it's more an issue with gaming in general but that's left over 8-bit design there.

  7. Mark, Mech, I made the mistake of trying to use two fingers at a time during some sections when I first played through the demo, which is why it was so difficult. The second time through was much easier, since I just used my thumb.

    Are you joking?

I figured someone would ask if I'm joking but I'm actually not. It doesn't effect the fun factor of the game so few people are going to care but I feel things like that look odd in games that strive for realistic environments. It's like random battles in RPGs, we are at a technology point now where stuff like that isn't necessary anymore. There's nothing wrong with questioning the way things have traditionally been done. I shouldn't single out this game though.

Imagine if Bungie put "The Library" at the end of Halo.

    Yuck.
