Okay, you're right. The PS2 has tons of RAM, no aliasing issues, and a built-in hard drive. Can I have my credibility back now?

The controls of Killzone are too harsh to be fun in multiplayer, but they work great for single player, forcing more tactical gameplay than Halo's run-and-gun fragfest.
"What's that in the sky, Bruce?"

Using hardware limitations as a measure of game quality is retarded. Admit that and explain that you weren't trying to argue that in the first place (and explain what your point was) to regain your credibility.

Don't think I've ever played any game on easy. And my statement wasn't to knock Halo at all, just to demonstrate the differences between the games. Halo = run and gun, jump over shit and shoot, melee, etc. Killzone = take cover, take a still position, and shoot while ducking behind rocks between bursts of fire. Killzone is Medal of Honor-esque in that respect. Halo's more leaning towards DOOM.

  3. MarkRyan, join AOOGJA and protect your opinion from pointless bashing now!

  4. ?

I've never shied away from arguing my opinion. It's why I'm on message boards.

How about you just adjust it to God of War official thread? Having all that shit in there frightens people off.

I also just got my game. I have yet to play it though. I'll try it later.

  7. I grabbed it today. The first level is the demo. They added save points along the way, they look like Prince Of Persia's. So far I'm pretty happy I got the game. The wenching takes place shortly after the first level, but you don't see anything other than titty. They say dont go, you climb on top and then the camera pans to a jar on a table beside you. As you rock the casbah you see the jar moving about until it finally falls over. When I'm assuming you're spent. But the process can be repeated, and each time you finish the combo you get red "mana"? The stuff you use to upgrade your weapons.

As for the rest of the game, I've gotten into athens now, I see Ares off in the distance, he's a huge bastard looking like a viking for some reason.

But it does impact the nature of the games, though. RAM limitations mean you're generally exploring smaller more confined areas, unless the game's in the hands of a very skilled programmer. Jak & Daxter & GTA are the only PS2 games I can really think of that get around this with some impressive environment streaming code, but it's not a widespread phenomenon.

The lack of a hard drive means a) no downloadable updates, b) no custom soundtracks, and c) the developers can't harness it as virtual memory, like plenty of Xbox games do.

And jaggies/sparklies are just fugly and detract from a game's aesthetic appeal.

Okay, but that's 100% wrong. Maybe the game's like that in multiplayer, but in the campaign if you're playing on heroic or legendary the game's structured so you're moving through areas that have to be handled very methodically. Running into an area almost always means instant death; through most of the game you have to advance in baby steps. There are plenty of rooms that can take 10-20 minutes to clear even on the first level, as you trade shots with covenant from behind cover. It's only on easy, where the enemies can only survive a few shots, that running & gunning is even feasible.

Except it's not like small levels is a rampant problem among PS2 games (Ratchet and Clank and Transformers, two games I mentioned, have huge worlds without loading, as does the game of this topic, God of War). And even if the levels were miniscule, that doesn't directly reflect on the quality of the game anyway. Tetris is an outstanding video game and the whole thing takes place in a single tiny well.

    1) I wouldn't consider downloadable updates and custom soundtracks as some sort of requirement for todays games. 2) No Xbox games comparable to the games I mentioned even have custom soundtracks. 3) I think both downloadable content and custom soundtracks are detrimental to gaming. Downloadable content allows developers to be lazy, or lets them leverage the consumer in order to get them to pay for subscriptions just to complete the software they've already paid for. Custom soundtracks gives developers an excuse to make crappy music (RalliSport Challenge 2 comes to mind). Oh yes, and it's also 100% useless in any game that allows you to change the music volume.
And jaggies/sparklies are just fugly and detract from a game's aesthetic appeal.
But they don't affect the way a game plays, which is the ultimate measure of quality...

There is a difficulty setting between Easy and Heroic. It's called Normal. On Normal, Halo plays like a more dimensional DOOM.

  10. hey, sorry for getting a bit back on topic, but you guys know what game isn't getting pirated?

yeah, this one.. GoW.. apparently it's fucking enormous.

props to the devs, and may this result in many more sales of a great game..
MK2 on XBLA plz - let the unfolding of gameplay begin!!
