Doonesbury pays tribute to Hunter S. Thompson

Doonesbury is printed on the back of the section of the newspaper where the comics are in my local paper. I mean... that's saying it doesn't deserve to be on the same page as Family Circus.

I can't even read an entire Doonesbury strip long enough to determine whether it's funny or not.

I'm the same way with Cathy. Halfway through Cathy, I need a nap.

Actually, the character of Duke IS based on Hunter S. Thompson. So it's only natural that they mention his passing.

And no, Doonesbury isn't really funny at all. It used to possess a dry, intelligent wit, but that's long since gone.

The only thing I ever found funny about Doonesbury was that he drew Schwarznegger as a Floating groaping hand.

Yup, and cause this strip was so ironic of the situation, it's actually funny for once.

It would have been better if his head blew up for the last time on hearing the news, adding that nice final nail in teh coffin so to speak.

True, it really serves no futher purpose anymore other then the space it fills... which could really go to another comic thats actually worth reading.

Wow...Doonesbury is like the only comic I laugh at regularly. I hope it never goes, because it'll just be replaced by something stupid like a strip about a cartoonist and the conversations he has with his cat & dog. Or maybe a lighthearted family strip featuring a foolish husband, wise/patient wife who is always chuckling with friends over intimate coffees about their own foibles, and a slovenly teenager. Or worse, something about Jesus and little kids.

And kill off Duke altogether? That would have been fitting and perhaps even actually funny, but it would have robbed the comic of the only character that's even remotely close to being somewhat cool.

It's hard to believe that the comic was once deemed so "important" that when Mike Doonesbury got married in the comic it made the cover of friggin' Time Magazine.
