Favreau's take on this is pretty cool, he decided to to do as much practical effects as he could and not rely so much on cg, for example, the shots of the house floating in space were done using a small model house set against a blue screen.

i saw Favreau's thing at comicon. He was very interesting to listen to and very open about many topics, including his feelings on cg as mentioned above. He also mentioned the fact that studios will give people making family movies as much money as they want to make them, no matter how bad they are because they know they'll make thier money back.

They showed a lot of footage of Zathura, the preview and a clip that went on for what seemed like forever. The movie looks really really bad. The kids cannot act at all, and the whole thing is just them running around screaming. I have 0 hope for this movie now.

DAX SHEPARD the guy from the first season of punked and the shit-fest known as without a paddle is playing this movie's equivalent of Robin Williams, for some reason when that kid in the trailer says "I'M SORRY! I'M SORRY!" and "TAKE EVASIVE ACTION!" i just wanna punch something this looks awful...

But on the other hand it's directed by Jon Favreau the man who directed Elf, Made, and wrote Swingers...i'm torn here.

Chris Van Allsburg is brilliant, but I don't know how well 20 page children's picture books translate to feature films. Neither Polar Express nor Jumanji resembled the books much anyway.

Zathura is a proper sequel to Jumanji, btw, not just a similar premise.
