Its way more than just following the lines. You have to turn as little as possible to maintain traction and keep your speed up as high as possible.

I didn't let off the accelerator and never lost traction at a whopping 60MPH.

The drivatar glitch is due to the suggestion line being based somewhat on the max ability of your car. If you lowered your gear ratio correctly, you'd max out at around 50mph with your car hitting the rev limiter the whole time. This makes the suggestion line yellow/orange because you're "maxed out" even if you're only going 50mph.

If you're just going around the turns at 50mph while the line is green, you're not going to fool the drivatar training into thinking you are on the edge of grip/performance while in a corner.
