Thread: Superman Returns

  1. I'm watching the old movies now... and I'm almost positive I hate them.

Same here. They dont have many redeeming qualities.

Me and five other friends of mine got tickets to see the midnight showing of this tonight. I really hope this one isnt a stinker.

  3. I mean at first, Lex has an ambulance when he needs to pick up the dude after he sets the missile. Then he just miraculously has a truck with a house behind it?

    FUCK OFF.

  4. One of the redeeming qualities...

  5. Superman III and IV don't even exist as far as I'm concerned.

The same can be said for Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin.

  6. Absolutely fan-fucking-tastic. Great script, great actors, great effects, great everything... I really have nothing bad to say about the movie. I didn't like the old ones but it seems Singer can do no wrong.

  7. So just got back from the "midnight" showing (they actually started it at 10:00 at our theater). People were pretty excited over here to see this. One guy was dressed up as Superman, got in the back of his brothers' truck which had speakers blaring the Superman soundtrack, and they drove around the parking lot with him yelling like a lunatic, "SUPERMAN RETURNS YEAAHHH, HE'S BACK BITCHES , HE'S RETURNNNNED". College towns rule for stupid shit like this.

To ShinJohnpv, even though he may not listen, go see this.

    It was good.

Brandon Routh - omg he can actually act. This guy WAS Clark Kent, he was so goofy and lovable throughout that you couldnt help but chuckle at him,and the audience did this a lot. When he was Superman, he really did act like the "Big Blue Boyscout" with good manners raised on a farm. I'm glad that I was wrong about Routh.

Kevin Spacey = fucking awesome. I didnt really see too much of the annoying buffoon that Luthor was in the older Superman movies. I mean he had a bit of a malicious sense of humor at certain points in this, but for the most part this guy was ten times as evil and remorseless, and Spacey just made him look even colder and more ruthless. In other words he was more JLU evil Luthor than he was corny Hackman Luthor, and thats a good thing.

Marsden got to show off some acting chops, and Kate Bosworth was alright, I suppose. Her and Routh were able to pull off what appeared to be old school chemistry between Superman and Lois Lane and that's the important part.

Alright just some random points that were on my mind while leaving the theater:

    - WTF was up with Lex and the combat boots?

    - at the mention of Gotham City

Alright Spoilers from here on out :

    - I felt like this Superman was gonna be a dick or something for some reason when I saw him throw that baseball for the dog at the beginning( when he threw it into the atmosphere or whatever) and I laughed.

    - Did anyone else notice when Superman caught the brakeless car with Kitty in it, when the picture on the front page of that paper was shown to Perry , it looked just like the cover to Action Comics # 1 (ie. the first Superman appearance)

    - I was really worried when Superman dove under the "Kryptonite Continent" that he would do something movie breakingly bad like in the old movies.Like use his super eye beams to reverse its creation, throw his cape up into the air to form a portal to the Phantom Zone that would suck it in, or something equally ridiculous. Glad it didnt come off that bad, but was equally no small feat.

    - I dont understand Lex Luthor towards the peak of his evil scheme. Okay, he just created a big ass "Kryptonite Continent", landed on it with his copter, lays a trap for Supes of course, but then decides he's just going to sit around with his cronies and play cards? wtf? So he planned on just chilling on this big land mass when the US Army arrives, and just say, "Oh Hey, guys, I was here first , all mine!" What happened to all of this ridiculous Kryptonian technology, and technology from other worlds that Jor-El was talking to him about. I expected him to bust out with some futuristic looking tech to combat Supes and the government forces likely to be headed his way. He did mention he had this on the boat. Why didnt we see it? Maybe the next movie we'll see what else he stole or how he'll use the info?

    - I wonder if the next movie will show us what exactly Clark found around the remains of Krypton. Okay, it was a graveyard, but how did he end up in the big meteor ship? He must have found something.

    - Im assuming that Lois told Superman in the hospital that her son was his? So he was faking being asleep?Either that or he has hereto unbeknownst psychic powers?

    - And concerning the whole procreation thing, Lois has got to feel seriously violated. When Superman kissed her at the end of Part 2 she lost all memory of them doing the ole hunka chunka, right?

    - not sure how I feel about Superman not telling Lois who he is. Like Korly mentioned, I'd like to pretend that part 3 and 4 just dont exist. And we are going into new ground with the whole Superman Jr. thing. It just seems wrong for him to not, man up to the responsibility of being a father more. He was raised in a really wholesome country family and you would think that he would feel like absolute shit for just flying off and telling Lois, "Hey, see you around!1" Is he going to fly her a child support check every month or what? Fly Jr. to see a Metropolis Knights game?

I liked this overall, special effects wise, story wise (even though some stuff concerning a major spoiler was a bit off thanks to the craptacular older movies), action, acting, it was highly entertaining. I dont know about 'best comic movie ever' levels of good, but I did really enjoy it.

Agreed. Really loved the movie; enough that I will DEFINITELY be seeing it a second time this Friday.

  9. Man, I really want to see this but my housemate wants me to wait for him until he gets back from Japan.

Might as well try to talk him into playing Halo while you're at it. No matter how good it is, he'll deny it.

  10. Another thing about this, I liked the way Marlon Brando's quotes were interspersed throughout. It's was almost like Jor-el was this constant conscience for Superman, and whenever he was at conflict with what was going on around him the voice and its guidance would come back to him. Nice touch. And really different from the way it's handled in Smallville where Clark has more respect/listens primarily to his human father and has only fear for the real one.

Oh, yeah, liked the scene where he went on patrol - flies up into space where its silent, then he just focuses in on the sounds below until he hears something off, then breaks through the atmosphere to get to it - really cool.
