Still Doom. It's dark, you have no friends/help in the whole game or a reprieve from the solitude, it has disturbing sounds and enemies can come out of nowhere.

Agreed. The first game is more focused and better paced. It also had the benefit of being unlike anything else in the genre when it came out. Crimson Butterfly was still very good, though.
