No. This only applies to over the air broadcasts. Cable companies can still send whatever the hell they want down their pipe and it doesn't matter. It's just that once this is enforced you will not be able to set up your old rabbit ears and get a signal, you will need to buy a tuner that will take the new digital signal out of the air and send it to your tv either digitally or analogously (is that even a word?).

Right, so the people who need to buy new digital TV's and/or digital tuners are the same people who can't afford/don't want to pay 10 bucks a month for basic cable. I can see this going over well.

I took a course on Technological Adoption (how long it takes different groups of people to embrace new technology), and seeing how long and arduous the process is, especially for technological entrepreneurs, blows your mind.

if you can afford the TVs, you can afford the cable.... if you can't, then you get the converter... simple as that. Soon, prices will drop and everyone will have a digital TV. If you can get a DVD player for $30 now, when before they were $200+ only a few years ago, then you'll be able to get a new TV too. people will adapt, and life will go on. There's a difference between digital TVs and HDTV as well, so there's always the "cheaper solution" for those that can't afford it.
