In my english class we have to write an essay answering and explaining the question:

Do we have an obligation to value the common good above our own values?

We have to write an essay that is 7-10 minutes long (roughly 5-7 pages) and then memorize it to give a speech about it. Anyways, that's beside the point. I want to get your opinions and ideas on the subject.

I don't think that we are not obligated to do anything in life. What we are obligated to do is make decisions in life that has an effect on us and our surroundings. And it’s how we deal with these decisions that make up our values. No matter what anyone says or does, in the end, your going to be the one living with what we’ve done that day.

The above paragraph is basically my view on the question and my introduction to my essay, but I'm sure it'll go through a few changes before I have to turn it in.

Put it this way, were you to be, God forbid, President someday, and let's say that you have to decide to bomb a location you know will kill civilians, as well as some terrorists, are you obligated to do that, knowing it will save more lives than it costs, even if you are against killing of civilians?

I'd think about that one for a day and then do your homework.

I made a mistake. The paragraph is suppose to start off, "We are not obligated to do anything in life." I put the "I think that" for reasons beyond me.

Every night we face the decisions we make daily. If I were to kill someone, later on that day I could be happy about it or sad about it. Each ever way I go would make up my values.
