Thread: The Contender

  1. The Contender

Is anyone watch this? Its a really great show, the best reality TV out there. Im sick of the Apprentice because Trump is an annoying douchebag and the show isnt about business, its Survivor in NYC. Speaking of Survivor, Im sick of it because all the people on the show are smug opportunists who just want to get their face on TV (same with Fear Factor, Bachelor/ette, all other shows).

But the Contender, this shit is great. The people are actually boxers, not wannabe actors, and the fights at the end are really entertaining... or at least, the way they edit them are really slick.

There's only 4 guys left, so the show is wrapping up... and the ratings havent been too hot so a second season might not air. Check it out. And if you were turned off by Fox's "The Next Great Champ"... thats what happened to me and that show was trash compared to this.

  2. I watched a few episodes of this. It seemed really REALITY, instead of contestents on a game show.

Howard Stern gushes over the show every chance he gets. I watched half of the first episode and never really got a chance to see anymore. It's hard to actually schedule life around TV shows especially when it's of the reality-type.

I used to watch a lot of Fear Factor (mainly in syndication) but even that got boring. Sorry I guess.

  4. I've never watched the show for more than 5 minutes, but I know that one of the contestants killed himself. Did they ever make mention of it in the show?

The Ultimate Fighter > The Contender

The one huge problem I have with this show is how the fights are shown. I want to see every second of the fight not just 30 to 60 second recaps of each round. And I don't care how the fighter's family or Stalone reacts to the fight so I'm pissed to see that take up 1/3 of the fight's camera time.

I can't wait for TUF's second season to start.

  6. Thumbs Up Great Show

Watched a couple of episodes, and it is hands down the best reality show out there. Hopefully, I can catch the reruns of the episodes I missed. Stallone and Sugar Ray are really cool on the show. It just baffles me as to why Stallone does not get better roles. He is just as good an actor as Bruce Willis. (see Copland) Yet, Stallone can't get a good role to save his life. I thought he would have been a better choice for Unbreakable and Sin City. From what I heard Stallone crossed the wrong movie executives and is now paying the price. It would really be a shame if Contender gets canceled.

One thing about The Contender, however- I'm astounded by the shape Stallone's still in, considering he's almost 59.

Im really hoping that they have unedited fights on the inevitable DVD. I think there's a better-than-good chance thatll happen. But even if that happens Id still enjoy the original edits, which like I said I believe are solid and great television.

As for UFC... its cool but I dont want to buy PPV or anything.

Are you really doing that much on Sunday nights?

The Contender might be the best show on TV. It's a close call between that and Lost. The fights, or their edits as diffx mentioned, are phenomenal, and I like knowing that they count toward real boxers real records. It's not some trumped up (pun intended) bullshit story where no one loses anything for going.

Well if you have cable you could have watched TUF. Spike aired it and then had the finals on Live (which was like a mini-ppv). It was basically a MMA version of the Contender minus the family shit and they showed every fight in it's entirety. I duno when season 2 starts but I'm sure Master will make a thread for it once he hears.

I almost never have the money to buy PPVs either (unless I can get a large group together to pitch in for it) so I opt for the torrent solution.
